monitor plugged in but not working
Help! I am tearing my hair out here and cannot work out what to do. Ive been amost of this afternoon
I have a brand new Inspiron processor. Have just set it up to replace my old Dell. Havent changed the montor , its a 17 inch square looking one. About 6 years old. Never gone wrong.
Ive attched the blue VGA and all I'm getting is the floating red/green/blue/white dialog box should appearing on screen against a black background.
Ive randomly tried pressing the 3 buttons to the left of the on/off key. Dont know what they mean.
Have spent about 2 hours trying to email dell for support - pretty poor when its a brand new processor. Its switched on , but obviously I cant see whats on the screen to set it up.
Am really fristrated as I do not know next step. Can anyone help?
Cheers - Jane

We really need to know what is the model of your computer and the operating system.
What you are seeing on the monitor is the indication that you are not getting a video signal to the monitor.

This might not help, but I experienced the exact same problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 8200, and it is about eight years old. I allowed it to set unused for a few months, and when I turned it on the monitor started up but then went blank. Like your laptop, mine worked perfectly when attached to an external monitor. Dell tech told me I needed to replace the laptop monitor at a cost of around $900. No thanks. So, I just let it set for a week pluged in, and when I turned it on the monitor fired up normal. That was almost three years ago, and it is still going strong. Good Luck!

Hi - thanks guys - I really appreciate your support.
Well -have just switched it on and it said (the display) that it was in standby - encouraging I thought, so I turned on the new processor. It immediately fired up the Dell logo - hurrah...then went to a tect screen saying it had an error and gave me a choice of 2 items.
Repair something (cant remember)
Start Windows normally.
I chose the recommended option and the screen went black ( about 5 mins ago now) and hasnt started doing anything else.Doesnt even sound like theres any noiaw coming from the processor - just the light is on.
I reckon that Ive upset it yesterday - I mean - it was switched on for the first time - would be trying to set itself up and then after my lack of success wiht the screen - I had to switch if off by holding in the power button on the processor for 10 secs, so that cant have done it any good. Now I'm thinking that I need to do the same thing...should I have said start windows normally? I chosed the one that said recommended !
Any ideas?
