I just hooked up my new desktop and it started out fine and I was able to get my service tag off the screen but then it started to load windows but instead of bringing up windows the screen went black and now it says self test feature check how do I fix this?

tstokes,

That message on the monitor indicates that there is no video signal coming from the computer tower.  Be sure that you have only one video cable connected between your comptuer and your monitor.  If your system has two video output places and you connect both of them to your system, the result is that neither will work.

I just bought two 2001fps as well and plugged them both in before starting my comp for the time could that be the problem? Also how do I go about fixing the problem?

tstokes,

What model computer do you have?  What video card did you purchase with your computer?

tstokes,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Plug just one monitor to the system to see if that works for you. In order to use 2 monitors on the system you will need to have another video card installed.

tstokes,

Actually, the ATI Radeon X300 supports dual monitors using a DVI to VGA dongle.  Check this link from the X300 user guide:

So how do I solve the problem of the black screen? should I just try plugging in one monitor and then turning the computer on?

tstokes,

You should be able to do that, but you will need to use the front panel controls on the monitor to choose between either the DVI input or the VGA input to the monitor.  Check this link for info on using the front panel controls of your monitor:

Big I thought with the dell 2001fp you could connect a monitor to either dvi or vga if I have a dvi and a vga on my desktop wouldnt I be able to support both without adding any additional items?

tstokes,

To use a particular input port (DVI or VGA) choose that input using the front panel controls on your monitor.  To test your monitor, connect ONLY the VGA (blue) cable to the computer and select VGA input on the monitor.  Turn the computer on and see if you get an image on the screen.  To test the DVI input, connect ONLY the white cable to the computer and select DVI input using the front panel controls on the monitor.  Turn the computer on and see if you get an image on the screen.
