monitor problem

My Dell E176FP monitor just started acting wierd.  When it is plugged in, but the computer is off, it cycles continously through various colors (full screen) and does not respond to the power or menu buttons.  While in this condition, as the computer starts up a message "auto adjust in progress" displays briefly while the Windows screens come up.  While the computer is on, everything is normal, and the monitor responds as it should to the power and menu buttons.  But then after the computer is shut down, the monitor acts wierd as described above.  I have been using this computer and monitor without problems for about 15 months.  I have not done anything different to cause this problem which just arose.

When wierd, it makes no difference if the monitor cable is connected to the computer.  Holding down the menu button for 15 seconds makes no difference.

A relative of mine just started to have this same problem. Hopefully someone here can help us. I tried the directions on how to get it out of "service mode" but since it won't allow you to turn it off once the pc is shut down...they don't work... Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I think the monitor is failing in some way.  The colors are changing too, instead of a black background, it is not a dark black-green.

All,

* Make sure the PC and monitor are connected to each other and on
* Press the menu button to activate the OSD (On Screen Display)
* Push the - or + buttons to move between the function icons
* Go to Factory Reset
* Push the MENU button once to activate the highlighted function
* Push - or + buttons to select the desired parameter
* Once finished, push the Menu button two or three times to exit from the OSD

After a lengthy on line chat, Dell is sending me a new monitor.  The self test features did not work.  There is also some pretty good on line docs you can find through support.dell.com.
