Monitor Resolution not working right

I have 2 4550's. I am using one 19" Trinitron Monitor for both computers via a KVM switch.  When I change the resolution on one 4550 to acommodate a software need to 1024/768, it changes the screen view to smaller icons and text.  This has always been my perception of what is supposed to take place.  On the other 4550, when I go to 1024/768, everything is larger?  I have to use my mouse pointer to "move" the screen (all four directions, depending on what part of the screen I need to see)so I can see the whole screen.  I have a NiVidea display card 9700 TV OUT, etc.   I suppose I need to update the driver or re-install it.  Don't know what to do, actually.  In reading some other folks monitor problems, it seems that there could be a lot of things I might need to try, but I would appreciate going straight to the solution if someone out there would be so kind as to help me.  I am an elderly man with many health issues and I just don't have the energy or good eye sight to be doing more reading than I have already done.

Please tell me if I am wrong about what should happen when I change from the 800/600 to the 1024/768.  Hope to hear from someone about this.

Winruss5,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

When you adjust the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 then the icons become smaller in size.

Thank you Jesse for responding. I thought I was right about the size. Since this one monitor/computer does not act correctly, please advise what I need to do now. Though I needed to know if I was right about what the change should do to a monitor display, I now need to know what I can do to make it do what it is supposed to do.

Would appreciate your response as I do the first one.

Winruss5,

Try removing and then reinstalling the video card drivers back into the system to see if that will resolve the issue.

Jesse, thanks, I thought I would have to do something like this, but I don't have a clue to how to remove and re-install the driver of the display card. I'm not even sure where it is. Would you be so kind as to respond once more as to how to do that. I know you must get disgusted with folks like me. I probably could find out in other ways how to do this, but I must be honest with you by saying this would save me a lot of research time.

Would you please?

Thank you so much,

PS: Can people who don't have a Dell use this Forum?
