Monitor searching for signal, locking computer

Question

Have a new Samsung 226BW monitor (purch through Dell) connected in analog mode to 4 yr old Dimension 2400 (no DVI out). Win XP Pro SP2, 1G RAM. Monitor will periodically go black, show digital source indicator, then analog, then display desktop back but with computer in locked mode. Happens at random times, even when user is typing. Checked kb and mouse, neither has any buttons set to Lock Computer. Verified that user isn't attempting to use Ctrl-L or Alt-L and missing, hitting Windows key-L by mistake. Monitor was set to 'auto select', changed to Manual and selected Analog source, don't yet know if that solved problem. Was wondering if anyone else had come across this type of problem and if so what the fix was.
