Monitor Settings

I purchased a Dell Dimension 8300 back in December 2003.  It has a 128MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.  The monitor that came with the computer recently failed and I purchased a Samsung Syncmaster EX2220 wide LED monitor.  My old monitor was 18" but the new one is 21.5".  The optimum setting for the new monitor in 1920 X 1080 at 60 Hz.  My computer display settings preferences don't give me that option.  I currently have it set at 1280 X1024 at 75 Hz and the display is clear but I have excess blank black display on each side of the actual display.  Can I get the computer to support the new monitor?  Is this a graphics card issue?  Can I get an upgraded graphics card for the 8 year old computer and is it easily installed?

See if you can find a new driver for that video card. That would be the cheapest option.

Your video card is AGP 8x interface. Newegg.com carries them.

Thank you IEEE488.  I was able to download an updated driver that supports the optimum setting for my new monitor.  Problem solved.
