Monitor Upgrade - Video Card Question

I have an old Dimension 2350 and looking to upgrade the monitor as the current UltraSharp is limited to 1024X768.

If I upgrade to a larger LCD that supports a higher resolution, do I have to upgrade the video card too?

Video Card = Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV/Graphics Controller

thomameuller,

You do not necessarily need to upgrade the video card when you upgrade your monitor.  In the case of the Dimension 2350, actually upgrading the video card will be difficult since it is part of the system mainboard.  If you really wanted an upgraded video card, you could purchase a PCI video card and disable the onboard video.

Thanks Steve!

So I should be good to go with a new monitor?  I don't want to invest beyond the monitor since upgrading to newer PC would be next.

thomameuller,

You are quite welcome.  Get the nicer monitor now and when you get a new PC, you can really make it scream.  In the meantime, it will provide a very nice facelift for your Dimension 2350 system.

Steve,

I recently bought an LCD Monitor (1440 X 900 Max Reso) for my Dimsion 2350.  I'd like to get the most out of my monitor but I know it's impossible with the original integrated video card that I have.  I'm looking for a decent graphics card for upgrade.  Any suggestions?

LCD Monitor Specs

  • Samsung SyncMaster 906BW
  • 19” LCD
  • 1440 X 900 Resolution
  • 2000:1 Contrast Ratio

  • Pentium 4 CPU 2.00GHz
  • 1.99 GHz, 256 MB of Ram
