open folders on starting

Question

I have had Windows XP for a couple of months, and am finding that when I first switch on my computer I am presented with two open folders that I have to close before I can open any programs. It used to be just one open folder, now it has progressed to two before I can see the main screen. I find this very annoying, how can I stop this happening? Thank you, John
