AnimalMagic,

You state, Linux detects the correct resolution perfectly!, so what operating system does not?

Should've said, machine came standard with Win Xp... I'm trialing Linux and it works just fine picking up the screen resolution perfectly. WinXP will have to stay, so would like to sort this... Regards

AnimalMagic,

So for XP, you loaded both of these, correct?

Thanks for the links.

Well I hadn't installed the monitor driver you mentioned. I attempted to install from the CD supplied with the monitor, but it came up with a message saying it couldn't find a better driver and remained as 'default monitor'.

I tried installing both the drivers in your link, with no result (yes I did reboot, several times). I then tried deleting the three 'default monitors' and the two video adaptors from device manager. It then found new hardware and came up with a message saying the driver was not digitally signed. I accepted it regardless, and after quite a bit of faffing, I now have a system which less choice of resolutions, (a good thing) but still no 1680 * 1050 choice. Maximum I can get is 1400 * 1050.

There are two Q965 adaptors listed in device manager and three monitors, all seem to be OK. Not sure if I should be using the Analog or digital driver for the monitor - I assumed digital. I also have an HDMI to VGA adaptor cable with the monitor connected to VGA plug (no HDMI cable was supplied with the monitor or the computer).

Regards

Nobody got any suggestions?

Bump... is there any hope for this one?

There is indeed. It involves editing an inf file in the setup and reinstalling... I'll post the specific details later...

I was only going for 1440x900 resolution, btw.

OK, got it working, though not by editing any files... I unpacked the Intel setup files, then did a manual install of the drivers in Device Manager and manually selected the driver from the unpacked directory path.

Pretty annoying though, and a waste of time. Most people are not going to go through the trouble or be able to figure that out. Dell really ought to support the updated drivers, or at least allow customers to install a display driver even if it's not yet officially supported.

Use this info at your own risk!

Edit igxp32.inf

change
HKR,, TotalDTDCount, %REG_DWORD%, 0

to
HKR,, TotalDTDCount, %REG_DWORD%, 5

and

HKR,, DTD_5,%REG_BINARY%, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00

to

HKR,, DTD_5,%REG_BINARY%, 79, 39, 90, 40, 62, 1A, 25, 40, 68, B8, 3, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 1C, 37, 01

run setup
restart computer
change resolution to 1680 * 1050

I wholeheartedly agree that Dell should provide a proper setup etc and I am very disappointed at the response from this forum - I got this advice from elsewhere.
