Orientation Change

Sorry if I have missed previous posts that my answer my questions, but i was tired of searching...

I am debating buying a dell monitor that has the swivel feature that, according to the flashy promo material, changes orientation from landscape to portrait and back. I think you are aware of what i am referring to... my question is: how is this accomplished? Is there something in the monitor that senses my swiveling it and tells the computer to change the orientation? OR will it remain say in landscape but at at 90deg until I physically change something on my computer myself? In which case am i basically paying for a stand that has a swivel joint and i could use  any monitor and buy an accessory mounting arm and switch the setting on my computer myself (if that is in fact how its done) because i will have to no matter what?

I talked to someone at bestbuy (but didn't think they seemed incredibly knowledgeable) and they said dell sends software with the monitor that takes care of the orientation changing. Is this true??? AND is it automatic somehow?

I am also wonder about graphics cards. I will need to replace my current one no matter what. But none have any info on being compliant with this swivel technology. Is there something i should be looking for regardless, or perhaps taking into account, of the questions/steps i asked about in the previous two paragraphs?

Basically if im going to buy this monitor i want it to be worth my money. I am planning on removing it from the stock stand no matter what and attach it to a longer mounted arm ( with a swivel joint). Then i just want to grab the monitor and swivel it,and after a sec, have it automatically change
orientation. If it is all software, and not say a mercury switch or something in the monitor and tells the computer to change, then i will just buy a cheaper monitor and use the swivel in my aftermarket arm.

Thanks in advance for any input

Display rotation is handled by the graphics driver.

1908WFP User Guide:
After you have rotated your monitor, you need to complete the procedure below to rotate your operating system.

NOTE: If you are using the monitor with a non-Dell computer, you need to go the graphics driver website or your computer manufacturer website for information on rotating your operating system.

1. Right-click on the desktop and click Properties.
2. Select the Settings tab and click Advanced.
3. If you have ATI, select the Rotation tab and set the preferred rotation.
If you have nVidia, click the nVidia tab, in the left-hand column select NVRotate, and then select the preferred rotation.
If you have Intel, select the Intel graphics tab, click Graphic Properties, select the Rotation tab, and then set the preferred rotation.

Actually, the nVidia settings are accessible from the System Tray. You could also use iRotate.
