No idea what caused it or if it might come back. The fact that it appears on the grey screen but no other colors is odd. Was the replacement setup the same way using the same cables and ports on both the P2715Q and the computer? What are the 20 digit serial number and revisions of both? We are up to A03.
In terms of the original monitor, the diagnostic test patterns (monitor button 1 and 4) for all colors other than solid grey are very bright, so I suspect that they masked the problem that was evident on the solid grey test pattern which is relatively dim... The malfunction did appear on other colors using Windows which were less bright than the diagnostic color test patterns... I have googled for images of vertical abnormalities on monitors and haven't seen anything similar to what happened to the P2715q, which was uniform vertical alternating lighter/darker areas about 3 - 4 inches wide that remained stationary on the screen and flickered...
As to the "sleep mode" issue, thanks for the idea of switching the cables, but they had no effect, the replacement DP - mDP cable worked just as well on the original monitor in terms of waking it up from sleep mode, so it's not the cables... Everything else was exactly the same, same computer w/ same settings, same ports, same monitor setting. The replacement monitor will simply not wake up from sleep mode if one just moves the mouse, must power off/on to wake it up ... Strangely both are A03 revisions.. The original monitor (that does easily wake up from sleep mode) was manufactured in October 2015, the replacement monitor was manufactured in May 2015.
I'm back to using the original monitor to see if the original vertical abnormality reappears, will be in contact with tech support when they return on Monday, I am inclined to return the replacement that has the sleep mode issue which has not gone away,... if the vertical abnormality comes back on my original monitor thinking of going for a different replacement, if it not thinking of keeping the original .. .

Thanks Chris.
