I just experienced this exact same problem about an hour ago and I've had my computer for 10 days. My computer was in "sleep" mode and I moved the mouse to "wake it up". The monitor never came up and the LED light just starting blinking, alternating between green and amber and making a peeping sound as it alternated. I disconnected the cable from the back of the CPU, powered down the monitor and then powered back up - same thing.

The Dell P992 CD troubleshooting section says:

"If the LED indicator is flashing amber
Press the (power) button twice to turn the monitor off and then on.
If the LED indicator lights up green and the Self-Test message appears, the monitor is working properly. If the LED indicator is still flashing, there is a potential monitor failure."

In scanning through the Dell|Talk messages, I found yours and a few others with the same problem. It really appears to be a defective monitor and if it's under warranty, Dell will ship out a new one, but others say it takes 7-10 business days.

I have the same problem and they just shipped me a 2nd one today and the screen is just all black.
Can anyone tell me if they resolved this issue with this monitor or have any helpful hints?
They are sending me a 3rd and they/DELL are making me very upset, I am about to return my whole system

I just replied to the same subject but on another thread.  Apparently there are quite a few people having the same problem.  My P992 just died 3 days ago but in its 13th month of life.  Of course I didn't purchase the 2 or 3 year warranty so I'm not sure what my options are.  If anyone is interested, try searching the forums with the keywords "P992 blinking" to see (at least some of) the other posts.  Given the problem is so wide spread, is Dell doing anything for people besides replacing with the same faulty equipment?

Here some more information: when I search for "P992" nine pages result!  I read one of Dells responses back in August of last year.  The only positive aspect of this is Dell provides an excellent forum to discuss problems and get ideas.  They just need to close the loop and do the right thing.

Ditto for me.  See my identical problem on p992 thread.

Wow...you described my problem down to the T. And just like jkk03, I'm not sure what my options are at the moment--hopefully a "recall" will come out [soon]. By no means this is meant to bash on Dell. My overall experience with Dell has been very positive. Now that I'm faced with this issue, I wonder if that same positive experience will be tarnished. I hope not.

Ive had problems with my p992, that ive responded to on other threads as well. It seems to me the p992 has serious problems. Its no longer being sold by dell. However, i asked the tech support if there were any known problems and he said there was nothing listed in the database. However, my 7th replacement monitor is now on the way. not a problem eh?

I wonder if there's a direct connection with the problems that has been posted/reported here (and other means) that this monitor was pulled from sales (unless I just can't seem to find it on the website - as of Feb. 11, 2003).

Not being listed in the database doesn't necessarily equate to the monitor not having a problem. Perhaps the problem wasn't ever entered into the database--thus "there was nothing listed in the database." And if the problem wasn't entered into the database, why hasn't it been entered (as can be seen by the problems posted here)?

Could be.  It could also relate to the fact that Sony is phasing out the 17 and 19" Trinitrons.  They will just be making the bigger ones.  Perhaps Dell just ran out of existing inventory.  They still offer the larger ones.

The also still offer the P992 as a seperate item.  So Dell is still selling them.

They have been selling it in the S&P section for the last few days. I just got one myself (manufactured Jan 2003) and don't have anything bad to say yet. Display looks great at 1600X1200 (and 150% DPI).

You should send it to Decision One with a lot of money to get it fixed.

Yes, I loved the monitor--well, while it was still working. The resolution (1600 x 1200) and all was great. But for now, it's a gigantic paper weight until something is done. I'm still wondering what the final word is on this model regarding the problems it has been having.

If this is a small problem, Dell should fix it.  If it is a big problem, ditto.  If they ignore either scenario, then shame on them and shame on us for doing nothing.  Why can't they at least say what the problem is?  Do they simply toss the returned ones in the dumpster?  They have idiots for managers if they do.  So, it is likely they know what the problem is.  My next step is register a complaint with the Attorney General's Office.  If enough people do the same perhaps Dell would make a reasonable response.  It is unacceptable to see people returning monitors up to 6 times in quick succession.  It is also unacceptable to have them barely make it out of the warranty period.  If a product requires the larcenous procedure of extended warranty then the product and the company are inferior and people seeking quality products will have to look elsewhere.  Anyone out there want a Dimension 8200 Desktop tower cheap?

I've also had the same problem.  Monitor was 13 months old when it died!

Since I too did not purchase the additional warrenty, I'm out looking for a new monitor! Fortunately, my old Envision is still working, even after being 5 years old!

In fact, my son has the same monitor in his office and his died after it was 13 months old also.

Sounds like Dell has a major problem with this monitor.
