PLEASE HELP!!!! ink or marker on screen

I have either ink or marker on my screen. I have tried several different things to get it off: alcohol, nail polish remover, hair spray, toothpaste, and spot remover. The spot remover proceeded to smear it making an even bigger mess. Any ideas?

Isoprocal alcohol is the only way I've heard of for ink. Marker not familiar with.

Nail polish remover, isn't that like acetone, not recomended.

You probably Googled the problem as I see you've tried just about everything.
May be something in this blog:

Did your monitor come with the marker or whatever on it from dell? If it did then arrange for an exchange - there are plenty of posts on here to tell you how.
If, say, one of the kids etc. did it then........!  Say this is the case then I would take it to a professional to try to get it fixed. The screens on lcd s are so easily damaged so read up on this subject & DO NOT use some of the stuff you did or else you will be in the market for a new one. Household insurance may cover this also. Kids or idiots (apart from me;)) are NEVER allowed in our computer room - too many cables & things that can be damaged. Valium or cable ties can keep them away;) just joshing, maybe...
Hope this helps you,
cheers

Do you think that would work even though it isn't under warrenty any more?

I do not think that the spot is going to come off. It looks like it is actually underneath the top film or something.I wonder if I should send it in to Dell to have it repaired? Would they be able to even fix it or I am just wasting money on shipping?

If it is under the top film as you say it could be caused by another problem with some dell s in that an overheat has done this to some monitors in the past. If I were you I would arrange for a replacement monitor with customer service & tell them that it is a fault do not 'cough' tell them about 'cough' what you did to 'cough' fix it:smileywink::smileywink:
My opinion anyway,

Uh, I should have asked you how old it was. The usual standard warrantee is 3 years & 5 years if you paid for the extended warrantee.
Outside of this you would have to check with dell as to what the cost of repair would be especially when a new power supply & a panel would be needed. Your other choice would be that the price difference between the repair & a new one would not be at all great considering what would be needed for repair, freight there & back + labour.
The final choice would not be good, as if I am right about the damage it probably won't last much longer, & this option would be to put up with it, sorry.
One final thing I would do if the warrantee is not available to you, would be to take it to some dealer who you can trust & see what he can do for you. Unfortunately, most would try to sell you a new monitor.
This is the best advice I can give. A slight possibility that someone else may read this & offer a different solution - I hope so.
cheers

I did not take the extended warrenty. I wondered whether it was worth paying for the repair and the shipping back and forth. It would be expensive, I would imagine.  I will see if anyone locally will look at it. I have no idea though who to take it to.

Thanks for you help :-)

I have the anser for you if you havent made the problem to worse by all the abrasive stuff.  I will sing the praises of this wonderful invention for the rest of my life now.  I just had a smiliar problem...

I have one word for LCD monitor scratches...its actually 4 words!

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser; no water.

I just got a new home computer 4 months ago and woke up this morning extremely upset.  My 3 year old had taken a pen to my monitor.  The marks appeared to be a little blue (the color of the pen) ,but it wasnt just ink.  I tried rubbing with my finger to see if it could be rubbed off, nope.  I used have water half alcohol, nope.  I used the scratch remover spray I have for cds/dvds and and it wasnt touching it.

I was scared to use anything else I had read from message boards, etc,; that people had used only to make their problems worse.  I decided I would use the Mr Clean magic eraser before going any further.  I called the wife and asked her to pick some up on the way home and she told me we already had some here at home.  I gently rubbed the smallest "scratch" on the corner to see what would happen...It came right off!  I had 8 long "scratches" all over the monitor and they were all gone in less than a minute.

Good one!  If only we had that stuff here in australia:(

I hope it does work for carolyn as well - but hers is under the surface film & is also a possibility of heat marks from the psu.

Well, Thank you all for all the help. I think I have really destroyed my screen. The spot is actually spreading - there is a black line going both up and down from the spot.

Now my question is: is this repairable or totally ruined? Would I be able to even get trade-in value for my screen?

Thanks!
Carolyn

You could ask dell about the cost of fixing it but I would guess that it would be too high. The panel itself would most likely need replacing + labor + shipping. The older parts of the monitor such as the circuitry, power supply would not make this a great idea. A phone call would not hurt though.
Since you can't do much more harm to it (assuming dells option is not an option) I would try a heat source on the area (as long as it is not hot enough to do more damage or catch fire) for as long as possible. This may evaporate the fluid behind the facia. You could leave it on for a few days with a screen saver to stop pixel persistance. I am not sure that the monitor would generate enough heat to do any good though.
Sorry I can't be of more help,
cheers

KevinR100,

Did your monitor come with the marker or whatever on it from dell?
* That is VERY unlikely.

some dells in that an overheat has done this to some monitors in the past.
* Do you have some data to back this statement up?

The monitor did not come like this. It is a couple of years old. I think though that what I thought was a mark from a marker was really the start of whatever is going on. I have no idea how a marker mark could get on my monitor as no children are near it. Anyway I think it is something going screwy with the monitor. The black marks at the top of the screeen, which is no where near the area that I thought was a marker, are spreading  and increasing.

Please send me a private email so I can send the info to you. My email address is: carolynj77@aol.com

Thanks!
