Poor quality display on the E172fpb Flat Panel Display

I just received my new system with an E172FPB flat panel display and find the display quality to be poor. The text seems blurred and difficult to read.  I have tried changing settings (resolution and refresh rate) but to no avail. I have used the "auto adjust" without success. It seems as though black text is surrounded by a grey "ghost" and all color texts have different levels of fading on all letters. On smaller text, the middle of some letters is filled with the faded text color.

The 8-year-old monitor that this display was supposed to replace was much clearer than this new flat panel display. Is this normal, or do I have a defective monitor?

What display resolution are you using??

Optimal resolution is 1280 x 1024 60 hz

Using a lower setting will cause a blurry picture, this being the nature of LCD displays

Grec,

Try these steps if you have WinXP to see if this may inprove the screen.

ClearType is a font smoothing technology. ClearType is enabled through Display Properties.

1. Click Start-Control Panel
2. Click the Appearance and Themes icon
3. Click the Display icon
4. Click the Appearance tab
5. Click the Effects button
Everything gets a check EXCEPT for "Use large icons"
6. Below "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen font"
Change this to "ClearType"
7. Click OK
8. Click Apply-OK

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried all the suggestions and am presently using the optimal setting. I have also tried resetting a number of times.

The screen is actually clearer in some areas and more blurry in others.

Do I have a defective monitor?

Grec,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Here are some things to try resolve the issue that you are having with the monitor.

  • Push Auto adjust button
  • Adjust Phase and Clock controls via OSD
  • Eliminate video extension cables
  • Perform monitor reset
  • Lower video resolution or increase font size

Thanks for all the attempted help, but nothing has changed. I brought the monitor to work and installed it on my work computer, only to find the same poor quality for text I was getting at home.  That led me to believe that the problem was the monitor, not the graphics board.

Dell replaced the monitor with a new monitor. I installed that one the home system and the quality was still poor.

I did a screen print and saved it in a bmp file. It has some of the same deficiencies I found on the display on my monitor. That strikes me as odd because I expected that the screen print would look fine, even if the monitor was deficient.

If you click on the link below, you will get some idea of my problem. Although this file is a bit clearer than what I see on my monitor, you can get some idea of the problem I'm describing.

Read the paragraph starting with "To order.." . Also look at the line below that, where it says "Option 1 -". Notice how the letters are solid in some places and faded in others?

On my display, the words in white font to the left are also overshadowed with some blue background, making them (and most thin, light colored fonts) difficult to read.

Now, if you compare what you just saw at the link above, to the site it was downloaded from, you will see that the original site is much clearer.

Unfortunately for me, it's only clearer on my work computer, not on my new Dell. Any ideas would be appreciated. After about an hour on my new Dell, it really begins to strain my eyes.

Thanks,

Grec

I have encountered the exact same problem since I purchased my new desktop 6 months ago. My $400 flat panel is returning a lower quality than the 7-year-old CRT I replaced. However, since my desk is very small, getting rid of the CRT was my highest priority. I just accepted the lower quality as a cost of smaller footprint. My office Dell laptop has an LCD screen and has perfect clarity. Is it possible that I can experience great quality at home, too?

I have a similar situation in terms of space. As far as solving this problem in the short term, I pretty much gave up.

I thought I was buying a fully functional computer system for $1150. What I got was a great computer with a monitor that I can hardly read at times. Dell was only willing to give me a $100 credit if I return the monitor - hardly enough to go out and find another flat panel.

I will suffer with this until I get enough put aside for a better flat panel. I assure you it won't be a Dell however, nor will any other future equipment I buy.
