Power Save Mode

Throughout the last six months I've come across computers at my work with monitors that just wont display at all. Instead I get the message, "Monitor is in power save mode, activate using PC." Now this is happening when the PC is booted and running. Beyond turning on the PC's power, how can you activate the monitor? Is this message an indication of some other problem?

You can count me as another person with a "power save mode" issue.  First it started with my 2209wa not coming out of sleep mode no matter what I did.  Now, when I boot into Windows, just before it gets to the login screen, the monitor display "Entering Sleep Mode" (or something like that) and the monitor goes off.  Nothing can bring it out.  I have to then reboot multiple times to get it out.

I did as you suggested with my desk top a few months ago and did not have a problem until last week.  Now I always get the "power saver" message followed by a black screen.  I can reboot, unplug and the problem continues.  What's up with this?

How do you do the Windows key if you can't see the screen. I tried pressing the Win key and enter and nothing happens. I have had this Dell monitor for 2 years and never had it do this? I turn the monitor Power on and it goes green and then turns gold (which I assume is off. I ried booting the computer with a startup disk and nothing.

I have a 2003 Dell SC 400 and it randomly goes into Powersave mode even though I have all power settings to "never".  Is this a possible heat or lack of power issue?  WOulkd upgrading the power supply help?  I think it happens more when video card is most active (higher end games).  I also can't get out of Power save once I'm in.  Have to reboot.

My laptop screen is completely shot so the only way to see ANYTHING is through the external (Dell) monitor, which interminably shows a message stating it's "Entering Power Save", right after the pc is turned on and boots up.

I've tried:

Pressing the windows button then pressing enter

Pressing the Fn key then the f8 key, as well as rebooting, unplugging, replugging, holding the power button down for several seconds.

If i hit the menu button (on monitor) it states "In Power Save Mode Press computer power button or any key on keyboard or move mouse". No matter what I do it won't turn on.

When I initially got the monitor this happened and after playing around with it for a while it finally stayed on.  Once I unplugged everything and am now trying to get it back up and running it simply WILL NOT come out of power save mode.

Any instructions, advice, recommendations to solve this problem will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Thomas W

Without being able to see the laptop screen, I do not know how to setup the external monitor? The users here should be able to assist.

THANKYOU SO MUCH MR JESSE! I connected my vga chord to a flat screen tv and when I connected it back to my dell monitor it kept saying "entering power saving mode".. i had to come here! when you said to change the power saving setting it got me wondering how on earth would I do that when I cant see anything on my monitor.. however, yu gave me an idea.. heres what yu guys have to do, try connecting your vga to a flat screen or anything that has vga input then THERE you can change the setting, right click on the desktop, click on properties, screen saver, then Energy Savings Settings button.

Change all the settings to "Never", then click on "apply" and "ok". Power management has been disabled.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION (WORKED FOR ME)

Find the manual for your monitor at this site: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19?c=us&s=dhs&cs=19&l=en. This will tell you how to configure your monitor using the On Screen Display(OSD). I have had my Dell for over 3 years and within the last 2 weeks it would go into Power Save mode and I could not get it out of that mode without shutting down the CPU. I download an update driver but that still did not work. I set all my power controls to never and that did not work. Also when I did download the updated driver, for whatever reason the Catalyst Control Centre would not open so I did a restore back to when it did work however in order to do so I removed the digital cable and used the VGA cable and by doing so it did not go into power save mode so I was now able to get full function of my computer. However, I did not like the display for VGA(analog mode), so I swithched back to the DVI cable inputs which is white. Whenever switching cables it is important to ensure that you CPU and monitor are turned off. Neverthess, after switching back I did further notice that when I started up the computer or switched between users that the display would show a little black box that read "digital input" yet prior to all this happening the black box would read "Auto Detect:Digital Input" so I tried to figure out how to get that back. I found the manual for my monitor and there are 4 settings for the monitor right on the monitor: Analog Input, Auto Input, Digital Input and HDMI Input, so I set it to Auto Input and everything works perfectly now. I even use all my power settings for sleep, hibernate, etc. and have no problem waking it up from power save mode or sleep by jsut tapping a key on the keyboard. However, when I change it back to Digital Input the problem reoccurs, so it is important to use the Auto Input, at least, in my case. As a further I have set my monitor refresh rate to 75 HZ and display to 1024x768. Repost if setting the display to Auto Input works for you so that I will know if this solution works in other cases. Thanks.

On the front and I would say almost every monitor there is a set of buttons at the bottom and one of those buttons should let you cycle through the various input options as I mentioned above. Again, set it on the one that says "Auto". Further, ensure you have only one input cable into your monitor, whether it is VGA, DVI, HDMI  or Displayport. Repost back it this does or does not work.

hagbard72...Go this this site for your manual: <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> the Front Panel. If you have the digital cable hooked up then set the input source to Auto Detect:Digital. If that does not work then set to Digital Input. I hope either one of these works. You should not have to restart your computer once you do this, but for as long as it takes it may not hurt to do it. Let me know if this works. Thanks for you response.

Use the service tag or express that is on your CPU. That is what I used.
