problem with a very dark screen

hi-
i have an E151FPp (i think) and it wont turn on all the way. at first i thought it was staying black, but then i realized if i looked very hard i could see icons, and if i shine a light on the monitor i can see a little better, but it won't fully turn on or whatever, even with a light i can hardly see. i tried turning up the brightness and contrast, that didn't help. i tried putting display settings to default, that didn't help either. does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong? it's about a year and a half old. oh, and i am fairly computer illiterate, so could replies please use as plain english as possible? thank you so much!

What you are experiencing is called "Backlight failure".  It is a common failure among LCD's, if under warranty (it should be for 3 years, unless refurbished), call tech support for a replacement.  If not, happy shopping

dageezerus:

i am experiencing the same problem as other user.  My warrenty is over.  Dell support has'nt been helpful.  They suggested I replace my laptop LCD (estimated cost: $700-800);

Is this a hardware problem or a software.  Can this be fixed at a local repair store.

Backlight failure is a hardware failure.  One of the most common ones for LCD's.

Dell Out of warranty depot Repair for an LCD is $269.00 Labor & $430 for the LCD total $699 plus you pay shipping to depot, return shipping is free.

2nd option:

http://www.idparts.com/dell.htm

http://www.mmits.com/lcdsales1.htm

Contact one of these or other 3rd party vendors & buy a replacement LCD, I belive the 2nd will also install, you'll have to call ether for costs.

I have (had, as of today)  a 1504fp Ultrasharp too.  I've had it for less than two years. How old is yours?

When I called Dell today the girl told me it was my problem.  I understood it was out of warranty, but wanted to see if it was something that could be fixed and if it was worth the cost even if it could be fixed.  "No.  You have to buy a new one."  I went and bought a seventeen inch today (not a Dell).

I am a bit peeved about this.  Does this backlight problem happen a lot with LCDs?  $400 plus every two years ain't my idea of fun...at least with my old CRT I'd know I was saving a nickle every time I had to whack it to get the image straightened out.

Thanks.

It is the most common failure, but that is just like hard drive failure is one of the most common computer failures.  Backlight failures are about the same as Tube failures in CRT's, I haven't noticed any greater frequency of failures than CDT's

Dell was correct, generally, it is cheaper to replace a LCD (or a CRT) than get it repaired.

DaGeezerUS:

i spoke to one the local laptop repair shop; they indicated there could be 3 problems:

1.  LCD invertor

2.  Backlight

3.  LCD itself;

#1 seems to cost about $50 to 75-/- plus $50 (labour)

#2 seems to cost about $80 to 100-/- plus $50 (labour)

#3 seems to cost $300-400 plus labour

Does these numbers sound right; looks kind of cheap; i havent checked their credibility/references yet;
