S3220DGF, A04, G-Sync black screen flicker FIX

Good Day.

Please note that A04 revision is not out of the box G-Sync compatible. Black screen flicker presents itself on Pendulum demo and games when G-Sync is enabled in NVIDIA control panel.

The fix for this required CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to limit bottom range of monitor to V rate 49-164 Hz. Default for the screen is V rate of 48-164 Hz.

Remember to reset Driver via CRU utility after applying changes.

Tested on G Sync pendulum demo and now works. Slow-mo video also looks fine.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

After I have read a lot of things to try to set my 2 Dell S3220DGF revision A04, here is the solution which is working to remove all issues with one or two screens :

Do a clean reinstallation of the NVIDIA driver when you have the screen plug to your computer. It has resolved color issue for me. If it still doesn't work after that, you can go to device manager and uninstalled your Graphic card driver from here.

Also you need a VESA certified DP cable 1.4. This is really important. On laptop USB-C to DP (Maxonar, Club 3D) seems to be more stable than Mini DP to DP (Cablematters, Club 3D). But if they are certified, both cable type will work well (I do not recommend cable matters. Both cables seem less stable than other certified brand). Once connected you'll need to do those settings

In Nvidia control panel use these settings :
- Go in change resolution tab
- Refresh rate at 164Hz
- Use NVIDIA color settings instead of default settings
- Highest (32-bit)
- 10 bpc
- RGB
- Full

In your screen OSD :
- Go in Game settings
- Be sure Freesync is ON
- Response time is Super Fast
- GO in Display settings
- Be sure input color format is on RGB and not YPbPr.
- Smart HDR at Desktop

Those settings are working at 164Hz, 10bits and HDR very well without any brightness variation and screen blacking/flickering. No need to use CRU.

If after some time you are facing some brightness variation just do this solution :
- Go in change resolution tab
- Open Nvidia control panel
- change output dynamic range to limited and click apply
- change back output dynamic range to full and click apply

This should resolve the issue until next sleep mode.

I hope this will help people that still have issues with the S3220DGF. I can't say if this is working for old revision as my 2 screens are Rev 04.

I'm facing this and I'm about ready to return the monitor. I've tried several different fixes involving CRU including yours but still received black screens. Did your black screens ever return after you changed this?

Thanks!

Thanks for posting this non-supported by Dell "workaround". Hopefully it will assist other S3220DGF users.

I can confirm this workaround fix by NFourie.  Thank you OP for this!

I just received this monitor today and was in the middle of running the Pendulum Demo trying to troubleshoot the lack of G-Sync compatibility when I found your post.

Dell, you guys should fix this ASAP.

xSalty1,

Policy: Dell AMD FreeSync monitors and Nvidia video cards

Dell is not going to test/validate the following Dell AMD FreeSync monitors (AW2518HF, D2719HGF, S2418H/HN/HX/NX, S2419HM, S2719DC, S2719DGF, S3220DGF) with Nvidia video cards, drivers, or the usage of Nvidia G-Sync.

When using any of the above Dell AMD FreeSync monitor with an Nvidia video card, all Dell will do is verify that the AMD FreeSync monitor functions correctly at its maximum resolution using 60Hz.

Dell will only test/validate/support the usage of AMD FreeSync and greater than 60Hz with AMD video cards that have an HDMI 2.0 out port or DP 1.4 out port.

Then why does it happen with a RX 6900 XT?

I got a S3220DGF (A03), and experienced massive Freesync Flickering. The funpart is, that with my old 1080ti it was'nt there. GSycn compatible worked great, but the 6900XT @Freesync there is so much Flickering I had to sold the Monitor to someone who only uses it for Office stuff.

Can you tell me if this problem is fixed with the A04 Panel, or do I have to get a Nvidia card to rid of the Freesync Flickering?
