S3422DW, flickering on/off, Windows 10

Dell S3422DW

Dell S3422DW

Hi, my Dell S3422DW purchased in June 2021 (just out of warranty). All of the sudden started flickering off as if it were going into a sleep mode. I am using the S3422DW as an extended display from my Lenovo P52 laptop running Windows 10 Enterprise 64 bit connected via HDMI. When I work on my laptop screen for about 10 seconds, the S3422DW turns black as if it went to sleep and only when I move my mouse into that S3422DW screen does it wake up again. I tried updating the S3422DW drivers, switching to HDMI 2, powering on/off, checking my monitor settings on Windows (it shouldn't go to sleep until >10 minutes of inactivity) but nothing works.

It seems like a similar issue as this thread, but I'm not running off of macOS.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Issue was fixed through the following:

  • Uninstalled the Dell Display Manager software.
  • Went to dell.com/support, found my monitor product (S3422DWG).
  • Downloaded and installed the Dell Display Manager and S3422DWG Driver from the dell website.
  • Previously I had installed the update from the already-installed Dell Display Manager software update that popped up on my computer. It appears that the one I had previously was version 1.0, the version from the dell website was version 2.0.
  • Restarted my computer.
  • Issue resolved.

Have you tested a different HDMI to HDMI cable?
Is there another PC there with HDMI out port to test on the S3422DW?

No cables, monitor power button reset
* Turn the PC off
* Turn the monitor off
* Disconnect every cable (including the power cable) from the monitor
* Press the monitor power button in for 8 seconds (clears any residual power in the circuits). If not a mechanical power button, just wait 8 seconds
* Reconnect the power cable and one video cable to the monitor and PC
* Turn the PC on, then the monitor. Retest

I tried a different HDMI cable and the same issue occurred. I tested the computer with a different monitor today (Dell U3419W) and the issue did not occur. I will test the faulty monitor with another PC this evening to see if the issue still occurs.

A few updates to this issue:

  • When I used this laptop with a different monitor at work (Dell U3419W), the issue fixed itself both at work and when I reconnected my Dell S3422DW at home. Great.
  • The issue never happened again, but I dropped the S3422DW and cracked the screen recently, and bought a new S3422DWG, which has been working great for a month or so.
  • Today I installed the latest version of Dell Display Manager (v1.56.0.2109) and the same issue started happening on my new monitor! Fortunately I'm under warranty so I'm in progress with Dell  to resolve the issue. I'll update this thread when I hopefully find a solution.
  • I've tried using different HDMI cables and different inputs and no dice.
