Screen font display problem on 2405

Question

Suddenly my screen fonts are harder to read. The letters appear to vary in thickness. I have seen this problem before as a refresh rate issue, but there is only one refresh rate supported at 1920x1200 (60hz) and it's set at that. The monitor did not use to have this problem. The settings got reset, so I think it has something to do with settings either on the monitor or in the operating system. Note that if I set the colors to 16bit the problem goes away, but there is no reason for 32bit color to cause this problem and it didn't before. I am using an ATI AIW 9600 Pro.

I stand corrected. Refreshing the display corrects the problem, thus changing from 16bit to 32bit color also corrects the problem - until the next reboot. It always boots with the display hokey. Don't know if it's the monitor or the vid card, but I have the latest vid card drivers.

Since this happens with both ATI and Nvidia cards, it appears to be a monitor problem...

I am having the exact same problem. I tried your solution (32bit to 16bit) and it appears to work, but only until the next reboot. I am using the latest 2405fpw (analog) drivers from Windows Update and my video card it a 7800gt.   any idea? my monitor is 3 days new out of the box.   eb

Analog? Are you sure? The 7800 cards only have DVI output as far as I know, so it should say Dell 2405FPW (Digital) under Display Properties. Which cable did you use?

originally, i was using an analog cable with the dvi adapter that came with the card- due to the positioning of the monitor, the dvi cable was too short. i have since repositioned the computer and am now using the dvi cable and, two reboots later, it appears to be working again (crosses fingers). as for the driver- is there more than one? when i tried to find the 'digital' driver, it pointed me to the same file as the 'analog' driver.   eb

No, there's just one monitor driver and is not something that would change... it gets the 'Analog' versus 'Digital' part from the input port you have it hooked up to. The drivers you'll want to consider playing 'keep up' with are your video card drivers, they are updated on a fairly regular basis.

has anyone solved this problem? i am experiencing the same problem with my new 2405 and changing the bit depth does not solve it. any help would be appreciated. -josh
