Answers: It was his XP Pro edition, He does not have a Dell, and he did a complete PC restore before he installed XP pro at my request because my pc was acting up really bad.  Therefore I cannot do a system restore because there aren't any. I have some now, but that is just since the pc was restored a few days ago.

I will do as you suggest when I get home and uninstall and clean the driver etc. As well as ask my friend about the chipset !!1

Thanks again ,

A restore is to go back in time using the windows xp restore program.  What you did was a re-installation of windows I think.  Did he Reformat the hard drive ? Or did he do a repair installation ?  Tell us what he did.

We will get to that possible problem later....For now, un-install the video driver from Add/Remove.  Than use a good driver cleaner linked below.  Afterwards, install the video driver for that video card ( ATI or Nvidia ).  Go into Display Properties and set the resolution to 1024x768 for that monitor.  Do not set it to anything else.  Native resolution works best for each LCD monitor.  Set it also to 32 bits and 60 Hz as well.  Try and download a driver, but if you cannot, have your friend download one and give it to you to install.

You also have to make sure you or your friend installed the ChipSet driver for the system.  Was that done ?

http://www.drivercleaner.net/  Link to a driver cleaner.  Run it twice after the un-install of the driver on your system.

Get back to us soon.....

You should not have to use the cleaner if you have done a system reinstall. Try first to simply download and install the video driver (not the monitor driver). If you continue to have problems, then do a clean. ATI has a program on their site to download and accomplish this or use
driver cleaner for Nvidia. See video forum FAQ linked here.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. My system was still hosed, I learned late in the day about chipsets, security patches [after a clean 98 install], and I was running out of time for Christmas, so I gave up and bought a new Compaq with XP. Win98 was my downfall in the first place. What a wretched OS. Merry Christmas to all.
