LCDs do not need screen savers. Actually, CRTs only need them under certain circumstances.

They're fun, though.

To prevent images from becoming burned-in to the screen.
 
But even with LCD's,  you can have image burn-in,  though it is not permanent as with CRT's.

Was the original purpose of screen savers to prevent images from becoming burned-in to the screen or was privacy the issue?

There is really no need for a screen saver in any case. It's better and more economical simply to set the monitor to turn off after a prescribed period of time.
