Do LCD monitors need screen savers, or are they only necessary for CRTs?

LCDs do not need screen savers. Actually, CRTs only need them under certain circumstances. They're fun, though.

To prevent images from becoming burned-in to the screen.   But even with LCD's,  you can have image burn-in,  though it is not permanent as with CRT's.

Was the original purpose of screen savers to prevent images from becoming burned-in to the screen or was privacy the issue?

There is really no need for a screen saver in any case. It's better and more economical simply to set the monitor to turn off after a prescribed period of time.
