Two 2007FP (S-IPS and PVA)
I just ordered a second 2007FP and this one is S-IPS based on the "L" at the end of the model. The other one is PVA - model ends with "S". Both are A05 and the S-IPS is noticeably brighter at the same brightness level.
Unless I center my head exactly on the S-IPS panel I see a red/purple tinge in the part of the screen furthest from my eyes (black background). It seems fairly consistent I have seen posts that say this is normal and other posts that say it is visible only at extreme angles so potentially this is normal.
Because I have 2 monitors there is no way I can avoid seeing this tinge fairly regularily.
I'm not sure whether I can request a different panel that would guarantee me a match or maybe I will get used to it.
Right now I am trying the PVA at brightness 26 and the S-IPS brightness at 13 which is fairly similar but the S-IPS has a bluer white so in Vista where you have blue and white shades in IE7 I can see the differences in the shades much easier on the PVA panel whereas the white appears whiter on the S-IPS in comparison.
Any general comments or helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
BTW, previously I was using the 2007FP PVA with a NEC 20.1" viewable CRT and I wanted more desk space and a closer match between my monitors so that is why I ordered a 2nd 2007FP when they were on sale recently.

You will have to do some sort of calibration, either software or hardware. Hardware is better but there are free online utilities and software.
This will get as close as possible but the different panel technologies may preclude a perfect match.

Thanks for the reply.
If I stand just to the outside of the PVA monitor then then entire black background of the S-IPS has a noticeable purple tinge. Would calibration solve that or just make the colors match better?
Do you know if a hardware calibration tool would be useful long term (ie. short life due to changing technology) and whether it would be useful for calibrating an HDTV (LCD or Plasma)?

This is normal for these S-IPS screens, and calibration will NOT help at all.
This is the problem with Dells unfortunate decision to treat two completely different panel types with different characteristics as completely interchangeable(they are not).
Some people prefer PVA, some prefer S-IPS. No one anywhere would want a mismatched pair of panels like this.
Dell has been lambasted (deservedly so) on just about every tech forum for doing this (google dell lottery).
But Dell has never done any of the potential simple things to fix this anti-consumer behavior. Such as:
1: Stop selling one of the panel types and stick with just one kind of panel.
Or
2: Break it into two models 2007FPs, 2007FPl that identify the type of panel you can order.
Instead the only reaction to complaints seems to have been an attempt to obscure they panel type.
I bought one of these, which would have been my ideal monitor, but I got burned by the lotto and returned it and left it at that. I won't buy a monitor that is an uknown quantity. To this is like honda selling a car, but randomly putting Ford engines in half of them. Flip a coin on which you get.
If you have patience you could send it back until you get the one that matches, because Dell won't help rectify the situation. They won't acknowledge there is a difference between them.
This really made me mad when I got burned. I research before I buy, I felt like I was bait n switched. Don't buy any Dell without doing extensive research. Find out the panel type, find out if there is a lottery, find out about the other issues. Find out if there is a better panel from someone else...

- would it be useful for calibrating an HDTV?
Most work in conjunction with software installed on the PC, but I seem to remember reading that some can be used on HDTV as well - you'd have to check individual models.
I have a 2007WFP S-IPS. I never notice the purple tinge unless I put up a black screen and look for it. IMO, the viewing angles in general and color performance more than make up for it. Each panel type has its strengths and weaknesses, eg. S-PVA has better black level. Look at an image on both screens from an angle and see which on you prefer.
Even with the same panel type, you'd probably need to calibrate for an accurate match.

* That is not possible. There is only one part number for that monitor. We cannot pick and choose which monitor gets sent based on the panel/PPID number.
