U2713H Card Reader Not Working.

Ok, so after three exchanges from the original purchase, I finally received a U2713H with a good panel (no dead or stuck pixels, no scratches, etc..).  That was a month ago.

Today, I tried connecting the USB3.0 B-port (or what the manual calls the "upstream port") on the monitor to one of the USB3.0 female A-ports on my Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe motherboard and Device Manager shows generic USB hubs, but it doesn't see the card reader. Instead there's an "Unknown Device". I've tried plugging it into all four of my USB3.0 ports and have tried updating my USB3.0 firmware and drivers.

When I plug a different USB3.0 device into my 3.0 ports, the different device works fine.

When I plug the U2713H into my USB2.0 ports, everything is detected (USB hub(s) and card reader), but of course all of the USB3.0 ports on the U2713H then run only USB2.0 speeds and the card reader won't read / write as fast as it should.

I am running Windows 8 Pro. x64 and have all of the latest Windows updates installed along with all of the updated drivers and firmware for all of my hardware.

I have also installed everything on the CD that came with the U2713H as well as updated everything that the CD installed.

Anyone know how to get the card reader working?

I looked at the customer reviews on Dell's U2713H product page and saw at least one review where the user also had problems with the card reader on this monitor.

I purchased the three year advanced replacement and extended warranties for this monitor.  I called Dell tech support yesterday (Friday, February 2, 2013) and was transferred multiple times to people that did not sound like they knew what they were doing.  All I was trying to get was a new U2713H to replace this defective one.

What's the point of purchasing these warranties if Dell makes it so difficult to get a replacement?

LLMo, same results as us.

EJS1, Failure of bottom ports to reach 3.0 speed. For my notes, during your testing you did have the USB upstream cable connected from the bottom of the monitor to a USB port on the rear of the computer?

There is a chance that you could get a working monitor via exchange, but there is no certainty. IsLNdbOi has had 5 exchanges and all have the issue.

Chris,

Cable to upstream port on monitor was tested on 3 different ports - 2 rear ports and 1 port on top front of corsair case at control panel area (Power switch, reset switch, 4 USB 2.0 ports and  1 USB 3.0 port).

Can someone look at the Hardware ID's of the USB 3.0 Hub of these monitors in device manager and post back the value?

I'm just curious on who's card reader/Hub is used in this monitor.

I am not happy with this situation.  I paid almost a grand for this monitor after sales tax and the advanced replacement plan.

It feels like Dell is using me as a beta tester for this monitor.  I mean, an issue like this should have been found when they were designing and testing (if they did any at all) this monitor.

You do not have to endure any of this. Contact Order Support and explain your dissatisfaction and get them to authorize a RMA credit return. You will have to escalate to their manager for approval.

An untested 3rd party monitor upstream cable is going to complicate matters. To get a baseline, testing should be done using our monitor upstream cable. Then test your devices in the U2713H USB ports, bottom and side.

Just got a USB3 cable long enough to reach from monitor to tower (included cable wasn't long enough), and I'm having the same problems as others.

-- Random BSOD's

-- Constant disconnect/reconnect every 2 secs. (on side ports, bottom ports and SD card reader directly)

-- When connected to Intel Z77 USB rear-panel ports, the hub is recognized as a USB 3 hub. When connected to ASMedia rear-panel USB 3.0 ports, it is recognized as generic hub. But same connection reliability problems on both.

Motherboard is an ASUS P8Z77-V PRO, running Win7 x64.

Just re-tested with the Dell-supplied cable. Bottom ports are now stable (and USB 3.0 speeds). Side ports and card reader are still flaky with constant disconnect/reconnect. Can't really test speeds.

Believe me, I've tried that already.  They insist that they cannot give me a refund since the original monitor was purchased in December.

It looks like the Asus P8Z77 series have a particular problem with U2713H monitors - I had (still having) a lot of problems with a P8Z77-V LE, originally if the monitor USB connection was plugged in, the bios failed to find the keyboard at boot time (now found a combination of ports that works for boot).  but the dell calibration software still fails to run complaining that the USB cable is not connected even when I can access USB devices plugged into the monitor.

I also had this problem with asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard, but everything worked after I upgraded bios and all motherboard drivers on this PC.

I have a call ongoing with Asus about the P8Z77 issues as there is clearly something funny going on there, but there are clearly also problems with the USB3 implementation in the U2713H series monitors as well.

There are some excellent posts on the TFTcentral.co.uk forums which relate to this issue although they are focussed on calibration

I'm having exactly the same problem as described above by IsLNdbO. Is there any progression on this topic?

Does anybody know the specifications of the card reader (manufacturer/chipset etc.)?

Just got a new U2713H and am having the same issue.

On any USB 3.0 port I try with the Dell drivers on a patched Windows 7 64 bit system,with the USB cable that came in the box, the media card reader in the monitor shows up in Device Manager as being connected to a Renesas USB 2.0 hub. Other USB 3.0 devices on those ports work fine as USB 3.0 devices. My system has an Intel DX79SR motherboard with the latest BIOS.

I sold my 30" 3007WFP with a CF slot in the media reader with the idea that "at least the SD/HC slot will be USB 3.0".

Disappointing for such a high end item from a name brand like Dell.

If you guys know anyone else planning on purchasing this monitor, tell them not to.  At least not until Dell fixes the problems.

Unfortunately for me, Dell won't take it back for refund since I purchased it in December 2012.  If I had a PC back then with USB3.0 ports, I would have noticed this issue right away and would have returned it for refund w/in the 21 day return period.

I can't file a chargeback either since I used a Dell Preferred Account to pay.

Tried a few more devices:

Built in Media Card slot only works as USB 2.0 on any USB 3.0 port as mentioned above.

Side ports of the monitor with a Patriot 16GB USB 2.0 thumb drive - the LED on the Patriot flashes, but I never get a drive letter. Drive works fine on other ports of the PC. Won't fit in the bottom ports - too fat.

Bottom and Side ports with a generic 2GB USB 2.0 thumb drive - works fine (as USB 2.0).

Bottom and Side ports with a US Robotics USB 3.0 Media Card Reader - the lights on the USR unit don't even blink; it's like it's not plugged in. Reader works fine directly connected to the PC.
