Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing the U2722DE which looks like a great monitor.  Specifically I am interested in this model because of its KVM capabilities.

My intent is to use this monitor with a work laptop (Windows) and a PC desktop (also Windows).  The PC desktop has a RTX 3060.  The work laptop is a Dell 5580 with an i5-7440HQ CPU.  The laptop has a GeForce 940 MX.  It also has a Type C port on the left hand side with a thunderbolt symbol.

My intent is to move the PC desktop to the same desk as the laptop and use the U2722DE for both the PC and laptop utilising the KVM capabilities.  I do not intend on working on both at the same time so I'm not interested in PIP (Picture in Picture) or PBP (Picture by Picture).  I just want to be able to flip entirely from the laptop to the desktop and vice versa.  Basically, use the laptop during business hours and the desktop after business hours for personal use.

I will be using just the one monitor so no daisy chaining or anything like that.  Basically, when using the desktop just use the U2722DE.  When using the laptop, use the laptop in-built monitor and the U2722DE (in extended mode).

Questions.

1) I found this post https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/U2722DE-turns-off-once-USB-C-device-turns-off/td-p/8079651 where the person was having the monitor switch off because the laptop was going into sleep mode.  Does this mean the laptop has to always be on ?

Note that my laptop is plugged into the wall and I am happy to leave it this way if it means getting the KVM working and all I have to do is run a USB-C cable from the laptop to the monitor.

My work laptop has the following settings in "Power and Sleep" in Windows.

Screen: On battery power, turn off after 5 minutes.

Screen: When plugged in, turn off after 5 minutes.

Sleep: On battery power, turn off after 15 minutes.

Sleep: When plugged in, turn off after "Never".

So I guess my question is, can I achieve what I want "out of the box" or will the laptop not being used cause the problem mentioned in the linked post ?  Is there a way around this, maybe by playing with the "Power and Sleep" settings in Windows ?  Or some other way ?

2) Does the U2722DE come with a USB-C cable to connect the laptop to the monitor ?  Or do I need to purchase one separately ?  If so, what type ?

3) Will my laptop being a few years old now, work with the U2722DE ?

4) Can you switch from the laptop to the desktop using the keyboard ?  Or can it only be done via the OSD ?  If so, does it require a particular type of keyboard ?

5) My understanding of how this will work is :-

(a) the keyboard and mouse will plug into ports 8 and 10 on the monitor.

(b) the desktop will plug into display port (port 4) on the monitor.

(c) the laptop will have a USB-C that plugs into port 5 on the monitor.

Does this sound correct ?

6) Anything else I should be aware of ?
