U2724DE and APPLE thunderbolt monitor daisy chain doesnt work

I’m having trouble daisy-chaining an Apple Thunderbolt Display to a Dell U2724DE and a MacBook Pro M4. This is my setup:

MacBook Pro Thunderbolt output → Dell U2724DE Thunderbolt 4 upstream port (using the Thunderbolt 4–to–Thunderbolt 4 cable supplied with the Dell monitor) → U2724DE Thunderbolt 4 downstream port → Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter → Apple Thunderbolt Display (2011–2016)

Could the issue be the original Apple Thunderbolt 3/4 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter? The adapter works fine when I connect the Apple Thunderbolt Display directly to the MacBook Pro’s Thunderbolt port.

If this setup is not possible, can someone confirm whether daisy-chaining MacBook Pro M4 → U2724DE → U2724DE will work?
