Apologies, I did not include the video connection as it wasn't relevant to the problem with the USB devices.  I am using USB-B and DP from the XPS to the monitor.   After spending some time trying a different cable (luckily I had one) and multiple USB ports, I found a combination that worked utilising one of the 5gbps USB 3.1 ports, instead of the 10gbps port and a different cable.  I managed to get this working correctly last night

The disappointment here is that I spent a half day basically being told that this was my fault and when  the 'Update your drivers, firmware and OS' advice failed to give any results, I was told to go pay for premium software support (which wouldn't have helped).   Even after giving up on any hope of useful assistance and suggesting a return, it took 2 days to get a message saying 'we'll get back to you in 2 days'

Anyway, its working now but its a very poor support experience

USB Type-C Upstream connected to Mac
* Makes sense since USB Type-C provides USB Power Delivery, Data, and DisplayPort video signal.

USB Type-B connected to Dell XPS 8930
* Which provides access to the USB downstream ports. But how are you getting video from the XPS 8930 into the U3421WE?

* In the "Setting the KVM switch", the usage shown on page 62 =
When connecting HDMI + USB-B to computer 1 and DP + USB-C to computer 2

* I do not see this usage =
When connecting DP + USB-B to computer 1 and USB-C to computer 2
