U4021QW, DDM feature request, issues

Add PIP configs to Quick Settings I think this would really be useful, more so than contrast/brightness IMO.

Add command to read status
To allow further automation and optimization of input handling via the command line, it would be really useful to have a command that can be used to query the monitor for it's current display status:
- ActiveInput(s)
- PxPMode
- PowerMode
- Resolution

I'm particularly interested in reporting on the first two properties as this would allow me to have one keyboard shortcut to enable/disable PBP or PIP.

Incorrect locale in keyboard shortcut fields
System input locale (Windows 10) is set to nl-BE, DDM is showing French texts when registering shortcuts:

Zoom command doesn't work
readme.txt shows there is a /Zoom command to switch between PxP and fullscreen. Are there any required arguments to pass along with the command? This doesn't do anything on my U4021QW =
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\Dell Display Manager\ddm.exe" /Zoom

I can't get the command to enable PBP working

What works:
- Switch inputs by using /Applications/DDM/DDM /SetActiveInput
- Exit PBP by using /Applications/DDM/DDM /SetActiveInput Thunderbolt /SetPxP Off

What doesn't work is enabling PBP:
- /SetPxPMode PBP Thunderbolt DP: nothing happens
- /SetPxP PBP-2H-FILL: uses HDM1 as sub input and HDM1 is not attached and never set as sub input

What almost works:
- /SetActiveDisplay Thunderbolt /SetSubInput DP /SetPxP PBP-2H-FILL: it enters PBP with correct displays left and right, then sub input is suddenly changed to HDML1 for no apparent reason (HDM1 is not attached)

Slow command interface
zsh> /Applications/DDM/DDM.app/Contents/MacOS/DDM /SetPxP PBP-2H-FILL
2022-02-20 15:32:33.062 DDM[45664:4430660] Active process is file:///Applications/iTerm.app/
2022-02-20 15:32:33.137 DDM[45664:4430660] Active process is file:///Applications/iTerm.app/
2022-02-20 15:32:36.203 DDM[45664:4430660] Active process is file:///Applications/iTerm.app/
2022-02-20 15:32:36.224 DDM[45664:4430660] Active process is file:///Applications/iTerm.app/
1:SetPxP PBP-2H-FILL = Ok

A single command can take 4s to be sent to the monitor. It seems the DDM binary on macOS is doing something before sending the command to the monitor and whilst doing so it reports 4 times "Active process is file ...".

Referencing this June 2020 thread. @swamped207 , where is this documented?
Sorry, I should have mentioned that Dell supports quite a few PBP modes, with discrete names. For the U49, use "SetPxP PBP-2H-FILL"

Audio sub switching command

Please raise the request to add the possibility of switching audio between main and sub.

Currently this is only possible via the OSD and we cannot switch through an OSD shortcut!

I'm aware this would likely require a fw update. It would also allow DDM to control it via its UI.

Full list of DDM commands

I read somewhere that it would be difficult for Dell to maintain a list of all commands supported by a monitor. In my opinion that should be part of the monitor's documentation.

At least a full list of all known DDM commands can be published with some comments on what type of monitor that command can be expected to work. It's clear that the list of commands in readme.txt is incomplete.

A couple of things that may help with the current release of DDM for Windows (and Windows only):

- read status: this can be done, but you have to tell DDM to open a console first and wait for it to open, so it has somewhere to output the answer, e.g.,

"ddm.exe /Console /Wait 1000 /GetActiveInput /GetDisplayMode"

I don't think you can easily get the power state or PIP/PBP mode, but just a glance at the monitor should tell you those settings.

- incorrect locale: the text displayed is determined by Windows, not DDM, and reflects the type of keyboard selected in Windows Settings

- Zoom: this isn't supported on the U40

Thanks for the tip on reading the status. This can be useful, however not in its current state:

  • it will open a console for the already running ddm.exe and consequently DDM will fully exit when that console is closed
  • it should output to the command line and not to a detached window

Follow up:

  • Where do I go for macOS support/bugs?
  • Please ask Dell to at least publish all known commands with a disclaimer that it's not documented what works, so that we can figure out what's working for our monitor!

- DDM won't close when the console window is closed if you close the console window using "ddm.exe /console stop".

- DDM is a Windows application so it cannot output to the command line; that's why it opens a private console
