U4021QW, M2T104 firmware, switching on/off

I always thought that having the latest firmware was the best approach, but after putting M2T104 on my U4021QW, I've entered a world of Dell power on/off nightmare and I don't know how to disable it?

   USB-C input = Dell Latitude 3420, 1.19.0 BIOS, Windows 10

DP input = generic Windows 10 desktop

When I turn on the U4021QW, the laptop powers on and boots up, even though I've disabled the power on on USB-C dock feature in the BIOS. This triggers the "An incompatible device was attached to your Dock Port" message, but that's another bug that Dell don't care about and I've had to learn to live with for a year now.

I'm using the U4021QW with two PCs. What used to happen when I shut down the Dell laptop was the U4021QW would look for another signal, switch to the DP input from my desktop machine and I carried on using that.

Now, when I shut the laptop down (Windows 10 Power/Shutdown menu option) the U4021QW switches over to the DP input, but moments later it switches off (white LED goes out) - which I am presuming is either a "power off" command from the powering down Dell laptop or the U4021QW itself deciding that a vanishing USB-C signal is a good reason to switch off even though its busy displaying the DP input?

So I switch on the U4021QW again to carry on working on my desktop - which causes the laptop to power up again. I'm looking at the DP input from the desktop so I'm not forced to look at the laptop's display, but it's sitting there whirring away burning electricity when I wanted it switched off. The laptop noise is an irritation since my desktop has no fans and is totally silent!.

This has only happened after I've upgraded the monitor from M2T102 to M2T104 firmware.

Any thoughts on how to end this infinite powering off/on cycle? I've had to pull the USB-C cable out of the laptop, which is a lousy workaround.

OK, I've given up and gone back to M2T102 - sanity restored.  It's the Dell Power Button Sync functionality in M2T104 that made my setup totally unusable.  I'll start a fresh thread on this topic as the issue will impact users of any monitor that implements Dell Power Button Sync.

Which Windows OS M2T102 firmware did you use to install over the M2T104 firmware?

Hi Dave - can I ask how you found the old firmware. I have a different monitor from you (U3821DW) but I would LOVE to roll back to an older firmware from before DPBS. Maybe I can use your M2T102 also (I am currently on M2T105, though the Dell website lists M2T104 as the latest)?

I've had the monitor for over a year, so had downloaded and saved the firmware when it was released. I was lucky that the Dell monitor allowed an older firmware to be loaded. Many products I've worked on over the years wouldn't support that.

Do NOT try loading U4021QW firmware into a U3821DW. It will break the U3821DW. From what I can see you should be on M2B104?  The Dell site does have a Mac OS version of M2B102 - if you could get your hands on a Mac to downgrade the monitor you might be OK?

The DPBS issue is a total show stopper in a multi-PC environment. It's disappointing that Dell cannot see this and refuse to do anything about it. That said, my Dell laptop has been reporting the Dell monitor as an "invalid device" for over a year.

I have both, but I believe I rolled back to the Sep 28 version.
