U4323QE, problems with KVM

Dell U4323QE

Dell U4323QE

Just got one of these monitors. I can't get the KVM functionality working.

I have a desktop (windows 11) with a video connection from HDMI on the computer to HDMI1on the monitor, and a USB connection from USB-A at the computer to USB-C (data only) on the monitor. The second computer is a 2015 MacBook Pro with the video connection from Thunderbolt 2 (mini displayport) through an adapter to HDMI to HDMI2 on the monitor, and USB-A at the macbook to USB-C (data only) on the monitor.

My keyboard and mouse are both wireless with proprietary dongles that I've put in the two USB-A slots on the monitor.

When using the input source, this setup works fine - I can use the wireless keyboard and mouse for the desktop, and the laptop's keyboard and trackpad, switch the display between the sources, do all the display tiling stuff.  When I try to set up the KVM functionality, I get as far as a the stage where it needs to move the mouse... and it doesn't.

Any clues where I've gone wrong?

Hi there,

Had a delay while I sorted out a decent cable for the display. Once that was working, I found that the KVM set up worked, but I had to click the joystick to "refresh configuration" at each step a couple of times then it worked.

The built-in KVM switch with the monitor is a "hub-class" KVM switch.  That means every time, when users make a switching operation to the KVM switch, the connected system of the new switch-to target system will be required to do the USB devices enumeration (re-list and re-connected) to the target connected system's OS.   The procedure of USB devices enumeration to the OS can be done by reconnecting (physically plug and replug the USB devices to the devices to the new targeted system or push any reset of the KVM switch (with the monitor).

Normally, the requirement of USB re-numeration will just case some "hot-plug" error logs stored to the OS.

However, as the error logs accumulated overtime and increasing the size of the error logs,  the error logs will be overflowed to the point that the system no longer have the room to store them.     As the results, the users may be required to physically reboot the connected systems totally to clean up the error logs caused by the hub-class KVM switch.

Solution, don't use the internal built-in KVM switch with the monitor, but using an external KVM with USB DDM technology - with a "DDM-class" KVM switch.
