Windows 10, Drivers, S2440L

I installed Windows 10 without hardware changes and the monitor driver reverted to a generic Microsoft driver that will not let me take advantage of the 1920X1080 capabilities of my Dell S2440L monitor. I cannot find a Dell driver to replace the Windows generic driver, how do I fix this problem?

Per the sticky at the top of this board, "Monitor drivers and Windows 10", you should be able to use the "Generic PNP Monitor" listed in the Device Manager and still get the native/prime resolution of 1920X1080. Did you update the video card driver to a Windows 10 driver? Did you attempt to install the Windows 8 monitor driver into Windows 10?

I updated the graphics board driver but the Windows 10 (Generic Non-PnP) monitor driver will not let me go beyond 1024 X 768 pixels. Any assistance you can provide to get my Dell S2440L monitor back to a higher definition will be greatly appreciated.

Graphics Board Nivida GeForce GT740 updated to WIN 10 version, was OK with Win 8.1.

You can attempt to install the Windows 8 driver. I do not know if 10 will take it or not.

Regrettably, no. As I said, the Windows 8 driver may not take. We only validated this monitor with Windows Vista/7/8. The driver you tried to load was for those, not 8.1. We never released an 8.1 driver.

As I stated earlier in this thread, this monitor was not validated with Windows 10. Per the sticky at the top of this board, "Monitor drivers and Windows 10", you should be able to use the "Generic PNP Monitor" listed in the Device Manager and still get the native/prime resolution. Be sure to update the chipset drivers in the laptop via Windows Updates. Then ask the users on the Windows 10 board for assistance.

I have the same problem and have been thru the process with 1) Dell, 2) Microsoft, 3) Nivida, and 4) PNY - no fix is apparent from any of the group and I spent a lot of time finding this out. The obvious problem is the Microsoft Generic PNP Monitor Driver is not capable of reporting back correctly the capabilities of the Monitor and you are limited to a lesser 1024 X 768. What makes the problem such a disaster is no one will standup to the problem and say we are not going to fix it - don't waste your time. Me I got converted by this process to Apple method of support - standup to your problems and fix them.

Chris, your answer is not correct, the generic PNP Microsoft driver will not permit one to take full capabilities of your monitor, I have about 10 hours in trying to fix this problem. You are welcome to call or email for details.

Odd. Other users have reported that the Microsoft Generic PNP monitor driver is capable of the higher resolutions. Did you install the Windows 10 64 bit GT740 driver? The fact that the monitor functioned in non-supported Windows 8.1 does point to the Windows 10 driver as the culprit. But again, both 8.1 and 10 are not supported by Dell for this monitor model.

I installed the 64 bit version of Windows 10, I assume all of the drivers are 64 bit.

Do you have the characteristics of someone with a Dell S2440L Monitor that has installed Windows 10 and can get 1920 X 1080 resolution?

I build PCs and if it is graphics card upgrade I have no problem taking that route.

I have a PNY GeForce 740 Graphics Card supported by Nivida graphics drivers and they have said it is capable, so I am looking at the Windows 10 Generic Non-PnP” Monitor driver that reports back the Dell monitor is not capable of that level of resolution as being the problem at this time. This is logical given it use to work with Windows 8.1.

Even better, can you point me to a URL that will permit me to download the driver you think will work?

I would test a better video card in there.

Sorry - I was thinking you said Windows Driver (Monitor). The answer to your question about downloading Nivida 64 bit GeForce 740 driver is Yes.
