Backup HPE MSA 2062 used as vmWare-datastore via NDMP to Networker

Hi,

we have got a HPE MSA 2062, which is used for datastores for vmware.

Does anyone know if possible to backup this volumes via NDMP to a connected library on Networker ?

In passed we had a NetApp and is works fine.

what data would you even want to backup? not the data stored used as datastores for vmware I assume? As those vm's should be preferably backed up through using the NW integration with vmware vcenter leveraging the NW vproxy appliances to be deployed on each esxi cluster acting as a datamover? Or is the HPE also used as a NAS hosting regular files and not only to act as a datastore for vmware?

Does it support NDMP? If so, then it might be done the similar to netapps, even though I can't recall HPE being mentioned specifically in the NW NAS guides, unlike the Dell own NAS appliances and Netapp. But as NDMP is a open protocol, very likely any would do. In the NW hardware compatibility guide (2023). I see a HPE X9320 mentioned, and X9720 and X9300. So if the 2062 runs a similar OS, then it is likely to work...

However besides Dell also other backup product suppliers are letting go NDMP in favor of new apporaches to backup NAS filesystems, by "simply" having the backup server having the NAS systems filesystems that need to be protected mounted on it. However what is different in thar approach is that it will have a separate service monitor for block changes, to be able to backup faster compared to normal file-based backups of file shares. The new(er) Dell data protection product PPDM already has that, instead of doing NDMP using a specialized containerized NAS protection engine.

We also have some systems in backup via NDMP, that are not actually mentioned in the NW NAS guide nor NW hardware compatibility guide, but it still works.
