Disk-Based Backup Recommendations

Is there any place or documentation that discusses detailed recommendations for using Disk-Based Backups? I have them working with 7.3.1 and while they work just fine with performance and reliability, I'm having some difficulty grasping how NetWorker can be used to implement the backup schemes we are looking for.

For example, we want to do a monthly full to disk with a clone to tape (working). This is going to a single Disk device (E:\Backups\Device0) and to a DLT library. Then, we want daily incrementals to go to disk that can get recycled after 3 months. We also want the disk full to get recycled after 3 months. But if there is only ever a single media in the disk based drive (Full.001), then it can't get recycled until all the save sets expire which would never happen.

So the only way I can think of doing this is to create 4 disk based drives and rotate each month through the drives. Month 1 would go to Device 1, Month 2 would go to Device 2,etc. Then, the 3 month expiration would work.

But I can't find any documentation that deals with the conceptual level stuff for disk backups. Does anything like this exist?

Thanks!

Why don't you stage your data once they are on the disk after?

OK, I just found the spot in the Admin guide that mentions the individual SSID's being recycled after their expiration on a Disk backup (Thanks!)

But just to clarify you suggestion about staging...

First, get the monthly full backup to the disk device.
Then let the automatich cloning process create my immeditate off-site tapes
Then as space is needed on the SAN, use staging to move disk-based savesets to tape for the remainder of our 3 month recovery requirement.

Thanks again!

No, I'm suggesting:
- backup 2 disk
- cloning disk 2 tape
- staging disk 2 tape

Of course, if you can keep data for longer period of time on disk - no problem. Usually you will find environments can cope with data load for some 4-7 days and after that disk gets filled up. However, if you have enough disk space for backups inside 3 months period then just leave it on disk. ssids expired will be removed automatically from disk device (that is if you use advanced file device). There is no recycling of volume as with tape devices.

I looked at the Staging options, but I got the impression that it would migrate the save sets from disk to tape (for example) then delete the disk portion. We are planning to keep 3 months worth of backups on disk, yet produce immediate clones for off site storage. I liked the Clone option because it was immediate.

Are you suggestions Staging from Disk-To Disk (to remove last months save sets from the disk media) then Staging again from the 2nd Disk to Tape?
