I got confirmation from Vidda911 that the issue was caused by the firewall. Changing firewall configuration fixed the issue.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Broeste,

If I remember well the changes were simply open the ports both ways in the firewall 7937 to 9936 (or whatever ports were configured in NW) and also the Replication Manager ones 6728 and 6729, despite these shouldn't be needed if there is no proxy server.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi Carlos,

Thanks for your reply

No, this is not a proxy node. Any idea what then is causing this? The customef has an urgent restore so I will open up a sr with emc later today

Hi Broeste,

I would need to have some further information, in fact nmm.raw would help a lot.

There is also a new build of NMM 2.3 (109), which fixes some issues with the restores.

You can find it here:

ftp://ftp.legato.com/pub/NetWorker/NMM/Cumulative_Hotfixes/2.3/

Thank you.

Carlos.

Well, this is actually build 109. I had problems with build 79 and thought an upgrade might fix the issue but I guess not.

Hi Thomas,

Have you checked the dameon.raw on the client?

If this is a directed restore, have you checked the nmm.raw in both clients?

Have you find any useful information in the system and/or Application event logs on the server where you started the restore from?

If you opened an SR and have any input please let us know.

Thank you.

Carlos

Yep, nothing usefull in the daemon.raw. This is an Exchange 2010 DAG setup, so I'm trying a RDB restore. I has worked before but for some reason it stopped. There is nothing to find in the event/application log.

I will create the SR now and hopefully a solution will be found soon. I will keep you updated

Hi Thomas,

What about the Exchange event logs, did you find any RBAC event id 17?

Did you run NMM Config Checker? If so, any warning or failure?

Did you check the Replication Manager logs? With NMM Config Checker also NMM Log viewer gets installed, and that tool will help you to go through the RM logs.

Anyway let us know the outcome of the SR.

Thank you.

Carlos.

I did some poking around and can see some errors in the exchange logs but same errors as I see in the daemon and nmm logs

I just tried to run another restore and now it's restoring. I will let et finish. I think the problem is that NMM fails on the mount of the store. Instead of mounting the mail store through the RDB recovery wizard I mounted the store from Exchange instead and that has caused it to run. NMM then dismount the store when the restore starts so I can't wait to see when the restore is done and NMM will try to mount the store again.

I will update you tomorrow

I did some more testing tonight and I can't figure out why the following things happen.

I ran one recover which actually recovered the edb and logs but showed som vss validation error and Networker is not able to mount the store inside exchange. I tried mouting the store inside Exchange but with errors also.

Then I tried to redo this restore and it showed the original error again. The strange thing is that when the restore fails the folder where I pointed the edb and logs are removed/disappeared. I can't figure out what happens when the folders are being removed.

I ran config checker once more and it showed all green so no error reported from the config checker.

any ideas? I created a SR but havent heard anything from support yet. I really need a second view on this.

I will keep this discussion updated

Hi Thomas,

Now would be really interesting to check all the logs, including nmm.raw, Application, System and Exchange event logs.

What is the error message you get when trying to mount the RDB from Exchange and not from NMM?

What are the error messages you found in VSS the first attempt to restore?

Did you delete all folders and DB's for the RDB related to the first attempt to restore before running the second one?

About the folders you selected for the RDB, my understanding is that, because those folders were created during the NMM restore (with this I mean that were created using NMM GUI and not Exchange), if the restore fails, depending on the failure, NMM will automatically delete them.

Thank you.

Carlos.

This is the error message when I try to mount the store from Exchange. I guess the reason why I get this error message is because NMM has removed the folder, edb and logs files when the NMM fails

I'm looking for the VSS error but I have tried several restore after I saw the VSS errors. All the restore states the sames error message as shown above. Basically failed to mount the database

Hi Thomas,

When you create the RDB, do you specify the same path for DB and logs?

If so, can you try to delete all the RDBs created, close NMM GUI, open NMM GUI again, select DAG etc., create a new RDB but with different path for logs and DB.

Also take a look at this KBs:

https://solutions.emc.com/emcsolutionview.asp?id=esg123380

https://solutions.emc.com/emcsolutionview.asp?id=esg127107

Also ensure that wrietrs are ok before attempting the restore again.

Thank you.

Carlos.
