1350 wireless stopped working

Hi,
About a month ago my wireless stopped working on my Inspiron 1000 notebook.  The rest of the computer works fine.  Here is what I have tried;
I tried reloading software drivers, no help.
I tried restoring the settings of two months ago, no help.
I ran the diagnostics and everything passed.

What is happing;       The green power light on 1350 card lights up however, the link light that
blinks on and off while searching for a wi-fi zone never comes on.
`Under "NETWORK CONNECTION" AND UNDER "STATUS" it states
"Netwok connection not available".  Also if you high light the green signal
strength bars (all are green) it states the same thing.
Also the monitor symbol in the lower right box has a red "X" on it.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks,
Jack

The double monitor symbol is for the ethernet network connection and should have a red X through it unless you are connected by wire to an ethernet network.

Which wireless network adapter do you have in your Inspiron 1000?  If it is an internal wireless adapter, make the MiniPCI slot is enabled in the BIOS.   Then make sure that the wireless radio is turned on (the Fn F2 key combination toggles the radio on and off).   If none of this helps, go to Device Manager, expand the listing for network adapters and see if your wireless adapter shows up there.  If it does, open Network Connections - does a wireless network connection show up there?

Steve,

Thanks for your reply, I am using an external Dell 1350 card which the diagnostics says is working OK.  I checked DEVICE MANAGER and expanded Network connections and it shows two one is the DELL WIRELESS 1350 WLAN PC CARD and the other is the SIS 900 based for ethernet adapter.
The radio is on and I have two monitor symbols, on the lower right of screen one has a double monitor (ethernet) and the other is a signal monitor and both have an X through them.  I don't have any ethernet connection I only use the wi-fi wireless.
Thanks again for trying to help, I sure need it.

Right click the icon with the signal emanting from it.  Is there an option to Enable?  If so, select it.  If that doesn't fix it, then, as further troubleshooting step, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Steve,

After clicking run etc. the following came up under "WIRELESS CONNECTIONS"

MEDIA STATE------------------------------------MEDIA DISCONNECTED
DESCRIPTION-----------------------------------DELL WIRELESS 1350 PC CARD
PYSICAL ADDRESS---------------------------- 00-90-4B-CD-65-16

I hope I did this the way you wanted.  When I right clicked on the wireless signal(the green bars) it did not give me the enable option.

Thanks again,
Jack

Steve,
I am not sure what is managing the wireless.  I assume that the Dell wireless is.  How do I check?

Is Windows managing your wireless connection or is the utility that came with the wireless adapter managing the connection?

Open Network Connections.  Right click on your wireless connection and select Properties.  If a Wireless Networks tab shows up, click on it.  There should be a box next to "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings".  If the box is checked, then Windows is managing the connection.  Alternatively, if you right click the icon with bars and select "Open Utility", then you should see box next to "Let this tool manage my wireless networks".  If that box is checked, then the utility that came with your wireless adpater is managing the wireless connection.

Hi Steve,
The Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 is managing my wireless settings.

Thanks,

Change to letting Windows manage the wireless network.  Open the Dell Utility and uncheck the box, then open the Windows Utility and check the box to let Windows manage.  Then see if you can enable the wireless card.

HI Steve,
I tried changing it to Windows and it said wireless was disabled.  My single monitor and the green bars went off the screen.  It keeps telling me "wireless is not connected".
Thanks for your help and if have any other ideas I would like to try them.

To get the icon back, open network connections, right click your wireless connection, select properties, and check the appropriate boxes at the bottom.

In network connections, if you right click the wireless connection, what is the first option listed in the box that comes up?

Hi Steve,

When I right click on the wireless icon (single monitor with red X) the first item says "change firewall settings".  I have tried turning off the firewall however, it didn't change anything.

Thanks,
Jack
