Is this a daft question? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Is there any encryption on the router? If there is disable all encryption and try again. Also, make sure the MAC filtering is not turned on. If you can see a signal but not connect many times it's the encryption, sometimes however, it could be a firewall setting.
 
This card is not a Draft-N card.
