1394 Connection?
My 8300 os connected to a LAN with 2 other PC's operating on difference platforms; an old desktop running WIN95, a portable running WIN98SE, and this dell running WINDOXS XP HE. When I look at the properties of the XP I find 2 rather than 1 items for connections; a LAN enabled Intel PRO/100 VE and a "1394 Connection". Although the later says it's "enabled", it's properties show no traffic.
I became curious about this 7 months ago when I bought the machine but somone told me it was only my network card anmd not to worry about it. Recently, however, I've had trouble accessing the Dell from the other machine (something that's rarely done) and I've been trying to understand why I can "see" the other two machines fromt the DELL and the other two machines can see each other when the DELL is off but those older two machines can't see the DELL when it's on... though the DELL can see and activate both of them.
When I looked under the properties of the 1394 that never shows traffic, I noticed a grayed in box under the Advanced tab. The box is "Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection. Unchected is "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connect. Should this be checked?
Any idea why I have these two connections listed and if one isn't needed, how I get rid of it? (If I should)

jgreg,
The 1394 connection is the Firewire adapter in the PC. It is used to connect cameras, external hard drives and such. Technically it is a networking adapter, which is why it appears in Network Connections. Do not try to delete it, it's not harming anything and has nothing to do with the Local Area Connection, which is used for networking the PCs together. Also, leave the 1394 Connection properties alone, since you are networking using the ethernet adapter.
If you are having trouble with the other PCs seeing the WinXP system, check to make sure Internet Connection Firewall is not enabled. It is located on the Advanced tab of the Local Area Connection properties.
