1395 WLAN not working after driver update

I have an Inspiron 1420 running Vista Ultimate SP2, 32-bit with a Dell Wireless 1395 Adapter. Recently, I updated the driver for the adapter. After the update was complete, the adapter is not working at all. Device Manager indicates the adapter is present and enabled. I've tried everything from disabling/re-enabling to reinstalling the drivers again. I've been struggling with this for several days now, but nothing seems to work. I am unable to roll back the driver; the option is not available. System Restore failed though I tried several restore points. I'm at my wit's end and don't know what else to do. Windows cannot even find a network, though my desktop is picking up my wireless network just fine. Network Diagnostics gives me the option to 1) reset the adapter, 2) "the adapter is experiencing driver or hardware related issues", and 3) check the IP bindings. I've checked one and two and didn't see any problems. I find it very difficult to believe it's a hardware issue since the wireless was working just fine right before the driver update. The Dell Wireless Card Utility indicates "there are currently no wireless adapters available and enabled" but, as I said, it is enabled and the wireless is turned on. Am I missing something? Does anyone have any ideas about how I should proceed next? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

 brightblade,

It's a shame that System Restore would not work.

Try restarting your computer and tap F8, then try running system restore from there and see what happens.

Try running WinSock XP Fix and see if this helps.

What settings and channel are you using in your wireless router?

Try going to device manager, click on network, 1395 adapter and then properties, advanced. Try changing the Antenna Diversity from Auto to Aux and see if that helps.

Thanks so much for the quick response. I wasn't sure whether anyone would reply.

I tried your first suggestion and ran System Restore from the F8 menu: failed the first time and, when I tried a second time with a different restore point, it stayed at the "finalizing" stage for 3-4 hours which, I read, is much too long. There was also no CPU activity during those 3-4 hours.

Since the wireless adapter itself does not seem to be detected, I do not believe that it is winsock- or router-related, so I did not address your other suggestions. Remember, the wireless is picking up no networks whatsoever, and I usually am able to detect at least 5-6 networks in my neighborhood. I did try your suggestion to change the antenna diversity, but to no avail. When I do try to connect to a network, Windows says it cannot find any. From there I can click to diagnose the problem, and I get the options I first mentioned about resetting the adapter, checking the IP, etc.

Since I've been trying unsuccessfully for five days to fix this, I'm thinking I should just take my losses and reset the laptop to its factory configuration. Do you think that's a good idea?

I wanted to thank you again for your help. I went ahead and restored the laptop to its factory config and, Voila!, the wireless is working fine again. Ah, well, at least I'll have a cleaner system.
