1500 draftN connection speed keeps falling???

I have an 10 month old Inspirion 9400 running XP SP2 with a 1500 DraftN wireless card. When I connect to my wireless network it starts at 54mbps and as soon as I open a web page it falls steadily to 48 ,36, 24 and eventually 18mbps. The computer basically can't be used for web browsing. I also have a 1 & 1/2 year old XPS M140 laptop running XP SP2 that has the 2915abg card. when i use the XPS from the same location in my house it works great. I mention this because I believe that shows that interference is not the issue with connection. my router is a linksys wrtg54. Any idea what is wrong with the 9400? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless card and drivers. Tech support had me run a preboot diagnostic and it came back without errors. Could it be that the wireless card has gone bad? It used to work fine but it started dropping the connection speed about a month ago. I have not changed anything about my network in that time. Please help!!

does it act the same if the laptop is very near the router?
I am betting on the "N" card.
Just recently i tried to go back to my Linksys router(same as yours) as my D-Link has been having some issues...another story...
I have a laptop with an N card in it an orginally i got the systems up and running with the Linksys for about 10 mins then the laptop would not stay connectd and would exhibit the same symptoms you describe only mine would drop down to 1 or 2 mhz...well after fiddling  with this for about 4 hrs i just went back to the D-link and chalked it up to the linksys not being able to effectivly communicate with the N card..
The  N Should drop back down to the G range but since everthing is still draft who knows...
I would suggest that you get a G card and see if this still happens...
