All the students are required to use the supplied McAfee antivirus. I disabled but no change. She has xp sp3 installed. This computer worked fine both wired and wireless for three months then one day would not log on. Now that the computer is at home using my network, the symptoms are identical to what she was getting at school. Limited connectivety due to no ip address.
Ran the winsock fix but she doesn't have a security center on this university version of McAfee. It's viruscan enterprise and antispyware enterprise 8.7.0i. Wasn't able to find the internet and network sections. I tried to log on after the fix but no luck.
This is for printers but it will allow access through McAfee's firewall.
Allowing Printer past McAfee
1. Open the McAfee Security Center and then click on the ‘Internet and Network’
2. To the right of ‘Internet and Network’ you would see all the services that are present under it, just below that you would have a button ‘Configure’ please click on that.
3. Now you would have the Internet and Network Configuration, in this window you would have an option ‘Firewall Protection in Enabled’ to the right of that you would have a downward arrow, click on that.
4. Then click on the ‘Advanced’ button which would have a new screen up.
5. To the left of that window you would have ‘System Services’ click on it and to the right pane of the window you would have the ports listed.
6. Please check the option which is for ‘Windows File Sharing’ then click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘Ok’
Computer, a Dell Inspiron 1501 with xp sp3, is sitting beside the router but it won't connect hard wired either. Router is a Siemans Gigaset 567 with telus. I'm on channel 11 using WPA-PSK AES.
Top should show something like wireless network connection. Right click on the connection. Is it enabled? Left click on properties.
Go down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click on properties. Settings should say...
Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically.
I would make a new SSID and use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. Not sure if all the adapters, especially the older ones will connect to WPA-AES. I have my old Dell Inspiron B130 connected using the recommended settings.
I made all the changes and no go. Her computer always logged in wireless before she left for university with the old settings. These changes are all geared to wireless, are they not? I can't log on with the NIC cable either. If I try the repair option it comes back that the ip address renewel couls not be completed.
Plenty of available ip addresses, not using mac filtering, and router was reset to the above recommended settings although as mentioned earlier, the laptop was able to connect using my old settings before she went to university. I have had numerous devices connect recently, none with any problems. Pretty certain the problem lies with the laptop in some way.
I did all this before changing the router settings and just did it again using the new settings, with no luck. When I go into my LAN status, it shows "invalid IP address" and if I try the repair feature it says it can't repair the problem because it can't renew the ip address.
The person that knows a little more about this is away on a trip.
I would like to say, make a system restore point. That way if this doesn't work, you can come back to what you have.
Download the drivers for your adapter. Save them to your desktop.
Go to device manager. Right click on the adapter, then left click, uninstall.
Restart your computer. The new hardware wizard should find the adapter and it the drivers are already installed, then adapter would reinstall and possibably work correctly. If it doesn't find the adapter, then install the drivers.

Thanks !
Now click on Start>Run>Regedit
Once the Registry Editor opens up navigate to the following location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp
Highlight 'DHCP' now on the right hand side you would see 'Imagepath' Double click on it and in Value data make sure this is entered
%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Click on ok.
Restart the system and now recheck the DHCP service, if the path is set right, start the service.

tribune2,
Try reading...
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
What virus program are you using?
