2 ethernet ports?

If I'm connecting 2 pcs via a dsl modem and router, the 2nd pc is the only one that needs an ethernet port, right? My main pc is connected to the internet via the dsl modem the other to it by a cable.I'm getting online by both computers, but am unable to share files or email to the other. Any help would be appreciated. This networking is hard to set up!!

knightofpain,

You have cabled the LAN incorrectly.  Each PC should be connected to the router, using a regular, straight-through ethernat cable.  The router's WAN or internet port should be connected to the DSL modem.

If you are running PPPoE software in the "main" PC, it should be removed and the router should be configured for PPPoE with your userid and pasword.  And if ICS has been enabled on the "main" PC, it should be disabled, the router provides this function.

See this site for good how to networking tutorials.

Both pcs ARE connected to the router via ethernet cables.I worded my 1st post wrong.I'm getting internet on both pcs,but am unable to share files or email to each other. It's very complicated to me to configure a network.I've read many instructions and how-tos,they arn't very user fiendly for novice pc users.

knightofpain,

Start here, beginning at "Configure Computers with NetBIOS over TCP/IP" and work your way down.  Since both PCs can reach the internet, the networking configuration is done.  Now it is a matter of defining the workgroup and shares on each PC.
