2 Networking issues I can't resolve....any help appreciated

Hello all. I was wondering if someone could help me with 2 netowrking issues I have been unable to resolve. Keep in mind, while I consider muself very knowledgable about computers in general, I am new to networking. My second issue is with a wireless / wired network and I have absolutely no experience with that. Please bear with me.

1. My personal home netowrk was running fine up to a few days ago. Here are the specifics

2 computers. Main computer is Windows XP home SP2 (modified Dell Dimension 4700). The other computer is Windows XP Pro SP2 (home built). They access the internet through a wired router. Both computer can still see the internet. Up until a few days ago both computer could see and access each other on the network. Now, I can see the second computer through the network but I cannot access the files on it. File sharing is active on both. I have just upgraded Norton Internet Security 2006 on the main computer to be Vista compliant. The second computer has NIS 2006. I think this is the problem but when I disable the firewall on both computers I still cannot access the files. The error message is the standard "you do not have permission to access this drive....blah blah blah." Both computers have the Windows Firewall turned off. I have read about an issue with Norton 2006 and some sort of ODBC issue so I wonder if that is the problem. What to do about it is the question. And please....check the comments about how you hate Norton and how it is garbage. Removing Norton from the main computer is not an option.

2. A family members home network is like this...main computer is an older HP with Windows XP Home SP2 and Norton IS 2007. There is a wired router in place. They purchased a lap top computer with Windows Vista Home Premium and NIS 2007 upgraded for Vista compatibility. They purchased a wireless router. They can access the internet wirelessly on the laptop but only when the main computer is on. They cannot access the printer on the main computer through the laptop. I know nothing about wireless networks so verbose instructions will be greatly appreciated.

Don't feel bad about the 2nd issue. I have been working with networks for 30+ years and have the same problem. I was forced to get a new notebook (Inspiron 1501) that ended up being shipped with Vista and have the same problem in accessing any other computer on my LAN. It does not matter if it is WIFI or hard-wired. All of my other computers (VMS, XP, Linux, SCO Unix) can communicate with each other, but not with the Vista machine.

I was able to talk with a Dell tech who informed me that this is a known "feature of Vista, enjoy it." He also told me that the only way to "fix" the problem was to upgrade the 1501 to XP.

If anyone can come up with a better solution than Dell's, please let me know.

Ok, I figured out number 2. My family member was turning off the modem and router when they were turning off the desk top computer and their printer is not Vista compatible. duh. So their wireless works fine. But I still need ideas on the first part of my post.

I have figured out number 1 as well. It was the 2 versions of Norton IS fighting. I updated the kids computer to Vista compliant Norton IS 2006 and all is well. Go figure.
