3Com 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter: Device Cannot Start (Code 10)

Question

I have an Inspiron 8000 with XP Pro SP2. I normally use a wireless card to connect to the internet through my router. I noticed i had a port for a network cable. I connected a cable from my router, but i found no network adapter listed in device manager. I got my dell resource CD, and manually installed the device. After i restarted, i went to device manager and found out my device had this error. 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)' Does anyone know how to solve this? I think my network card has gone bad, but im not sure.

hi,

the specs for your system show the Inspiron 8000 came with an -optional- network card.

Are you sure your Inspiron actually has a fully functional NIC installed ?

If so, check the bios - it may be disabled.

Visually look at the card and see if there is one 2-wire harness to the board (modem only card) or if there is the 2-wire and also a 12-wire harness.  If both, you have the combo NIC/modem, so I would then reseat the card into the socket.
