If it was not being detected, then the Device Manager would not even list it.  Get to a Command Prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL and see what it reports for an IP address.

I said it wasn't detecting it because when i plug in my cable modem to my ethernet port the lights do not turn on and it still says LAN connection unplugged.  I also get the Fatal Error occured "Error Code #M1004" message and have searched the forums but found no fix.  I updated the bios and tried a windows repair but that didn't work either.  I would already have looked for a new one but in device manager it say it's working properly so i'm wondering why it's not.

Hi Xrunner,

I recently had a similar problem, in fact the exact same symptoms. In my case, the NIC was fine, as it reported up and working in Device Manager, and it passed all the tests from Dell's diagnostics CD.

Turns out it was the RJ-45 connector on the side of the laptop that was defective, one of the small copper wires inside it had been twisted, so no cable could be detected.

Just sharing my experience, in hopes that it may put you on the right track :)

Regards,

Rick
