You just need to replace the existing Mini PCI card with a new one that supports 802.11g.  The Mini PCI card is under the door on the bottom of your computer.  See the following:

That link is very helpful :)  I searched around for a mini pci wireless card and found a few but none specifically for the Inspiron 5100 :(   Doesn't Dell have a way of searching for parts, etc for a users specific machine?

Any Mini PCI wireless 802.11g card will work.  There is nothing that would require something specific for the 5100.  You don't have to buy them from Dell, but if you must, see the following:

Volcano, sorry to jump in but I have a related question:

As a 5100 owner myself, do you really gain nothing if the bios can correctly detect the wireless card?  I know it will detect some dell cards but it definitely can't the intel one I popped in.
