600m needs more signal strength!

If I get more than 15 feet away from the router, the signal strength drops off quickly.  Is there a compatible WAP (wireless access point) or OTHER way to boost my signal?  My laptop has integrated Centrino network card and my Dell TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Broadband Router is connected to a Linksys router (not wireless).  Thanks!!

Sounds like the antenna connector may be loose. Open up the access door and reseat it.

Matt,

Thank you for the advice.  Now that you mention it, the router's antenna has always seemed a little wobbly.  I hit the "reset" button on the router (no change in signal..still "excellent" in the room below the router, "very low" in other downstairs rooms) , but I can't see how to remove the cover to check on the internal status of the antenna.  Do I just need to use a flathead screwdriver in the side grooves and ease it open?

John,

Thanks.  I thought that he may have referred to the laptop itself (after I posted the response), so I unscrewed the 2 smaller access panels on the back of my laptop: one was near the slot where I would use a wireless networking card if mine weren't integrated, and the second was near the battery.  I couldn't determine the presence of an antenna, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

Any help finding the antenna is appreciated!

Matt meant the antenna(s) on your internal wireless card.

You are looking for the door labeled 'C'.

Open that up, and you'll see your integrated wireless card. There will be a small white lead to it with a small connector. disconnect the lead from the card, then reconnect.

Matt,

Any suggestions regarding the easiest way to improve my situation?  Can I buy a WAP that acts as a booster that will be compatible with my Dell TrueMobile router?  Or should I just get a new router that is stronger?  If you can tell me a model number to buy or whom I should consult, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

I would change the channel to 11, also remove any 2.4ghz equipment (phones), and if the router is near a desktop that has a 2.4ghz cpu I would move the router.  Remember; location, location, location.

I would suggest you try john's suggestions first.

If that doesn't work, the most powerful consumer router I know if this the Netgear WGT624. A little pricier than avergae, but it has a radio thats about 3x as powerful as anything else out there.

John and Matt,

I don't know how to change the channel (on the router?).  I'll be happy to try that and remove the phones, which are all 2.4 gHz (the desktop nearby isn't).

If I bought that router u suggest, will my system recognize it easily?

Many thanks helping a semi-literate Dell user!

Log into the router and under the Wireless area you can change the channel.  With the 2.4ghz phones near, you are suffering from interference.
