802.11g compatibility
I am considering the purchase of an 802.11g compatible laptop from Dell. ALong with the laptop I'll be getting a new 802.11a/g router. I want to make sure that this new router is compatible with my existing computers that I know are b compatible but not sure if they are g compatible. They are a Dell Dimension 8400 and my Inspiron 8600. Is there any way to do that?

Do you plan on connecting either the 8400 or the 8600 by wired ethernet? If you want to connect either of these by wireless, do they have wireless network adapters? If so, which make and model wireless network adapters do they have?

Unless you explicitly disable 802.11b backwards compatibility, any 802.11g router on the market will allow 802.11b clients to connect (at 802.11b-only speeds of course). Also note that presence of 802.11b devices on a network will reduce the network's performance with 802.11g devices. i.e. if you have an 802.11g-capable card connecting to an 802.11g-capable router or access point, you will see performance degradation as soon as an 11b client associates with the access point. Of course, if you are primarily using the router to share Internet access and not transfer files between computers, you won't see a difference since most cable modem and DSL connections won't even saturate an 802.11b network.
