9300 Wireless connection issue

Hi there,

We have the Inspiron 9300.  It was working fine for a while, but now all we get when trying to use the wireless router is "Web page unavailable while offline."  Then a popup shows titled:  Dial-up connection with a choice to connect to:  Broadband Connection.  It then proceeds to look like it's trying to dial into a server.

Under the Wireless Network Connections tab the status is Connected.  We can't see our wireless network at all.  It tells us that Windows cannot configure this wireless connection.  If we have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software, etc, etc.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Thanks.

What operating system are you running on the I9300? WinXP? What ISP do you have?(Cable, DSL, or dial-up)

Hi,

We've got Windows XP Media Center Edition w/ SP2 along w/ a Motorola 585100 cable modem and a Linksys WRT 548 router...when we check the status of the wireless network connection, we are connected with a strong signal strength.  We have the Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200BG adapter, driver version 9.0.0.61.  We can even see our wireless network!  However, whenever we want to go online, we get a popup saying "Web page unavailable while offline, click to connect,"  but it never does.  We know it's an incorrect setting somewhere, but have no idea.  Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks.

Click START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > INTERNET OPTIONS > click CONNECTIONS tab. Make sure the "Never dial a Connection" bulb is ticked? Close everything up. Reboot computer and try that?

In order to troubleshoot this further, click START > Click RUN > In window box type "cmd" hit OK button > In COMMAND PROMPT window that opens, type "ipconfig/all" at flashing cursor and then hit the enter key on your keyboard. Copy and Paste the results into a Post Reply Window and send?

Hi,

Just tried your suggestion.  Still getting the same "Web page not available while offline" message.  This is so weird because when I go to Choose a wireless network, there it is saying I'm connected!  Any other suggestions?  I really think it has something to do w/ my Broadband settings....

Thanks.

PS - Do I even need the Broadband connection at all?  My other laptop doesn't even show that as an option in Network Connections.

Thanks!

Right off the bat, I see that your wireless connection isn't DHCP enabled. Do you have fixed IP addresses for all your computers, and your router isn't configured to be the DHCP server for your network?(Automatically assigns IP addresses to all network components)

Here's where my experience gets questionable.  Not sure how to enable DHCP or if I have fixed IP for our computers.  Also not sure how to configure router to be the DHCP server for our network....

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Okay, I need you to verify the models of your modem and router?(Motorola doesn't make a 585100(SB5100?)modem, and Linksys doesn't make a WRT548(WRT54G, GS, GL, etc?)router.

Let's see....Modem is Motorola SB5100 and Router is Linksys Model WRT54G.

Sorry, my eyesight's not the greatest!

Try downloading and installing the most recent driver version for your wireless adapter in the 9300:

Also, instructions are at this site for checking the configuration of your router to determine if it has the proper settings:

And last, this is a link where you can update the firmware to your router. If you desire:

Given the amount of work ahead of you, one of these procedures should fix the problem.

Good luck!

I may be getting closer.  Latest ipconfig/all is:

DHCP enabled...............yes
autoconfiguration enabled............yes
autoconfiguration of IP address............169. etc
subnet mask........255. etc.

I had internet connection temporarilty but am getting popup saying "limited or no connectivity, might not be able to access the internet or some network resources."

When I click on IE, now it doesn't give me a popup.  Tries to go to Microsoft.com and says "page cannot be displayed, cannot find server."   I'm going to try powering everything down and back up again.  If you've still got ideas, would greatly appreciate them!

Thank you.

Hi,

Updated driver, no change.  Checking router settings now.  Downloaded firmware update, but cannot open .bin file on laptop.  It's asking me what program I want to open it with, and with no internet access, I don't seem to be able to open it...
