Does the link lights next to network jack and on the router port to which the cable is connected light up when both devices are powered on?  Does wiggling the cable in the port on the computer get the link light to light up?   It could either be the port itself or the adapter.   A cheap troubleshooting step would be to purchase and install a PCI ethernet adapter (should cost < $10).

An orange light is on and a yellow light blinks on the other side near the port. Wiggling has no impact.

Another question. There appear to be 2 USB type connections "on the same card" next to the ethernet. Is there a different cable I could buy and try to use those connections.

Also I'm not network savvy so you lost me on the trouble shooting tip.

thanks

The diagnostics seem to indicate that the network adapter has failed.  Connecting the ethernet cable to the USB ports would not only be impossible, but not result in the network adapter working.   It appears that using a cheap PCI network adapter would probably resolve the problem.

O.K. - It looks like I can pick up a PCI network card for about $20 at bestbuy. Now a couple more questions.

The existing ethernet connection appears to be attached to the motherboard. I do have a seperate card that looks like it is just for a phone connection (ie) dial up that I don't use. Can I unplug that card and replace it with the new PCI adapter? Otherwise i don't see where I have a slot to plug into.

Also second option. Could I use a wireless USB adapter?

Thanks

The existing network adapter is integrated on the motherboard, so you cannot remove it or replace it without replacing the motherboard.   You can disable it in the BIOS, although this is not necessary.   Are all of your PCI slots filled?  If so, you may have to decide to remove something.  For example if one of the slots has a dialup modem and you never use it, you could remove that PCI card and replace it with a PCI ethernet adapter.

Yes, you can use a USB wireless adapter, providing, of course, that you have a wireless router.
