Access Denied to File Sharing

I have a Windows XP laptop and Windows Vista Desktop on a home network.  The network is configured, and I have shared everything I can think of, giving permission to everyone, yet, I get an access denied message when trying to access files on the desktop from the laptop.  I have disabled firewalls and Windows Defender.  Is there anything else I could do?

I recently replaced the desktop and that is when the file sharing stopped.  It says the network path is not found and yet I can see the desktop on the network from my laptop.

Have you read the 2 messages at the top of this forum on Networking Vista and XP?

Try booting to Safe Mode with Network Support as a troubleshooting step so you can be sure that firewalls are not the problem.   If you have McAfee, it is particularly troublesome.

It's more than just installing the patch!!!!!  Did you read the rest of the text in those messages?  Have you tried booting to Safe Mode with networking support?  Since Safe Mode does not load any of the third party security suites, it could give you hint as to what is causing the problem.

Yes and I installed the patch and still cannot ready files on the desktop.  The network now includes the desktop and the laptop; they both connect to the internet, but I can't read files on the desktop.

Hi Steve,

Yes I read the text.  I have turned off Windows firewalls in both computers, disabled the firewall in McAfee, and turned of Windows Defender.

Steve,

Good idea,

I did that and still have the access denied message.

Then it is a problem with Windows Vista.   I have no experience with Vista (as far as I'm concerned, it's still a Beta version), so I can't help except to say try everything suggested in the threads I referenced previously.

Go to network conections for the desktop and laptop and highlight your connection. Then select change settings for this connection. Make sure file and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is checked on both computers. Then select advanced. Then select settings next to windows firewall. Select exceptions and make sure the box for file and printer sharing is checked also.
