Access to Internet
I have a new Inspiron6000 (6 weeks old) with a factory installed Dell wireless 1470 dual band WLAN Mini-PCI card. All of a sudden I am unable to access the internet. I have reinstalled the network connection and everything seems to be all set to connect until I click on Internet Explorer and it doesn't manage to connect with the internet. I have another machine using the same wireless network (this is also a Dell) and that connection works just fine. I went though all the various elements of this connection to make sure it was mirrored by the Inspiron 6000 and it all checked out. Do you have any idea what the next steps should be here. I ran the diagnostic tests, I checked to make sure that the firewall was not enabled. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your attention.

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Susan,
It tends to get really confusing trying to help more than one person in the same thread. You should really start your own thread and I will be happy to help you.
Note that your ipconfig output shows that you do not have a wireless network card. So you either than this command on a computer other than the one that has the problem, or you did have the wireless network adapter turned on or enabled when you ran. In order for the output to be helpful, you must run it while trying to connect to the wireless network, copy the output of the command, then either connect with an ethernet adapter and post the message on the forum or connect with a computer that can connect to the internet and post the message.
Please do this and start a new thread so that we can help solve the problem without confusing han8910 (the person who started this thread) any further.

Thanks for posting back on how you solved the problem. Good detective work. There are many instances documented on these forums of both the Norton and McAfee firewalls leaving stuff in place, even when they are disabled. Uninstallation of these programs is often necessary to troubleshoot the problem and determine that the firewalls are to blame, but it often takes a lot of back and forth discussion to pinpoint the problem. Again, thanks for sharing your solution.

Thanks for your response, which I read this morning.
Yesterday, I think I found what the problem was. I went through a process of elimination - I couldn't connect to the network wirelessly, then I tried to connect using a hard wire link and that didn't work either. I then tried to connect to the internet using a dial up connection and that worked. Then I downloaded a different browser to rule that out. I then looked at the software on the machine and disabled the factory-installed version of Norton Security 2005. Doing that enable me to access the internet - both hard wire and wireless. I went to the Symantec site and found an article on the problem, I followed the directions and it seems that even though the firewall was disabled some rules were preventing internet access. It seems to be configured fine and secuity etc. is enabled. I'm still not sure why it just happened but it does seem to be an issue that Symantec is aware of. Thanks again for your help.
